World Youth Skills Day is being observed today

  • The World Youth Skills Day is observed globally on 15th July every year to raise awareness about the importance of investing in youth skills development.
  • The theme of 2017 is "Skills for the Future of Work".
     Note:
  • In 2014, The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had established World Youth Skills Day.

Mukesh Kumar Jain appointed MD & CEO of Oriental Bank of Commerce

  • Mukesh Kumar Jain has been appointed as the managing director (MD)and chief executive officer (CEO) of Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) for a period of three years.
  • He replaces ‘Animesh Chauhan’.
  • Prior, Jain was an Executive Director at Punjab & Sind Bank.

  • Oriental Bank of Commerce is an India-based bank established in Lahore (currently in Pakistan) is one of the public-sector banks in India.
  • The bank was nationalized on 15 April 1980 and headquarter is located at Gurugram, Haryana.
  • The slogan of Oriental Bank of Commerce is 'Where every individual is committed'.

Haryana govt to set up eight new Women Police Stations at sub-division level

  • The Haryana Govt. has decided to set up eight new Women Police Stations at sub-division level in the state.
  • These will be established at Assandh, Dadri, Hansi, Gohana, Manesar, Dabwali, Ballabgarh and Naraingarh and each Women Police Station would have a hundred percent lady police staff.
  • The decision was taken as victims belonging to these areas were facing great difficulty in lodging their complaints as they had to travel a long distance to reach Women Police Stations at the district headquarters.

Gujarat govt forms Saputara Area Development Authority

  • The Gujarat govt. has formed the Saputara Area Development Authority (SADA) for “comprehensive development” of its only hill station in tribal populated district of Dang.
  • The authority will carry out planned development in 419-hectare area of ‘Saputara’ for tourism purpose.
  • The SADA will prepare maps and development plans considering the future requirements of next twenty-years.
  • The plan will define land use, eco-conservation needs, and other infrastructure.
     Note:
  • Saputara is a hill station municipality in the Dang district of Gujarat state in India.
  • It is on a plateau in the area of the Dangs' Forest, within the range of the Sahyadri (Western Ghats).

Railways launches mobile app ‘Rail SAARTHI’

  • The Indian Railways has launched an integrated mobile application ‘SAARTHI’ to cater various passenger requirements, including ticket booking, inquiry, onboard cleaning and ordering meal on a single platform.
  • The Rail SAARTHI (synergised advanced application rail travel help and information) such as safety for women, compliant facility and suggestion for improvement.

US House passes bill on defense cooperation with India

  • The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that proposes to advance defense cooperation with India.
  • The amendment passed by the House requires the Secretary of Defence, in consultation with the Secretary of State, to develop a strategy for advancing defense cooperation between the United States and India.
  • As passed by the House, NDAA-2018 asks the State Department and the Pentagon to develop a strategy that addresses common security challenges, the role of American partners and allies in India-US defense relationship, and the role of the defense technology and trade initiative.

Wholesale inflation falls to 0.9% in June

  • In June 2017, the wholesale inflation fell to 0.9% as prices of food articles, including vegetables, fell.
  • The inflation figure is the lowest in at least eight months since the availability of data for the new 2011-12 base year series.
  • In May 2017, the Inflation based on the wholesale price index had stood at 2.17%, and minus 0.09% in June last year.
  • Inflation in vegetables was minus 21.16%, meaning that overall vegetable prices fell.
  • Earlier this week retail inflation eased to a record low of 1.54% in June.

State Bank of India to slash NEFT, RTGS charges by up to 75%

  • State Bank of India (SBI) will slash charges for National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transactions by up to 75% to encourage more customers to transact digitally.
  • Earlier, SBI has waived charges for fund transfer of up to Rs 1,000 done through Immediate Payment Service (IMPS).

Govt relaxes FDI norms in various sectors

  • The union govt. has relaxed Foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in over a dozen sectors, including defense, civil aviation, construction and development, private security agencies, real estate and news broadcasting.
  • The government is relaxing norms to provide investor friendly climate to foreign players and in turn attract more FDI to boost economic growth and create jobs.
  • Foreign direct investment in the country grew by 9% to USD 43.47 billion in 2016-17.
     Two routes by which India gets FDI.
  • Automatic route: By this route, FDI is allowed without prior approval by Government or Reserve Bank of India.
  • Government route: Prior approval by the government is needed via this route. Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) w which was the responsible agency to oversee this route was abolished on May 24, 2017.

Sundar Singh Gurjar wins gold at World Para Athletics Championships

  • Indian athlete Surendra Singh Gurjar (21-year) has won the gold in the men's javelin throw event (In the F46 category) at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London (UK).
  • He recorded his personal best effort of 60.36 meters and took the top honor.
  • Dinesh Priyantha Herath (Sri Lanka) came second with 57.93 meter, while defending champion Guo Chunliang (China) was third with a season’s best 56.14 meters.
     Note:
  • The 2017 World Para Athletics Championships is a track and field meet for athletes with disabilities, governed by the International Paralympic Committee, being held at Olympic Stadium in London.
