1. World Milk Day being observed today

  • World Milk Day is celebrated every year on 1st June to educate people about the importance of milk in our diet (science 2001).
  • The theme for World Milk Day 2019 in India is "Drink Milk: Today & Everyday
  • World Milk Day is a day established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to recognize the importance of milk as a global food.
Note:
  • Milk is not only consumed by growing children but also by the people of all age groups.
  • It has great nourishing value and a rich source of calcium, protein, fat and vitamin C.
  • Mainly we get milk from cows, buffaloes and from other animals like sheep, goat and camel.

2. 1st June: Global Day of Parents

  • The Global Day of Parents is observed on the 1st of June every year.
  • The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.
  • The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 with resolution A/RES/66/292 and honours parents throughout the world.

3. FICCI survey forecasts India's GDP growth at 7.1% for FY20

  • The country's median GDP is forecast at 7.1% for FY20 and 7.2 per cent for FY 21.
  • According to The industry body FICCI's economic outlook survey, the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.8 per cent and 7.3 per cent, for 2019-20.
  • The survey was conducted in May 2019 among economists belonging to the industry, banking and financial services sectors.
  • Inflation is expected to remain moderate and the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rate is projected at 3.1 per cent in 2019-20, While, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has a median forecast of 4 per cent for 2019-20.

4. RBI sets up committee on corporate loans

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted a six-member committee headed by TN Manoharan (Chairman, Canara Bank) on the Development of Secondary Market for Corporate Loans to come up with recommendations to increase the efficiencies of the debt market and aid in the resolution of stressed assets.
  • The committee will make recommendations on required policy/regulatory interventions for facilitating the development of the secondary market in corporate loans, including loan transaction platform for stressed assets.

5. Godfather actor Carmine Caridi passes away

  • Carmine Carid (85-years) known for roles in The Godfather franchise passed away.
  • The veteran actor Carid also appeared in the final part of “The Godfather” trilogy in a different role – Albert Volpe, an investor in Michael Corleone’s casinos who is killed in an attack at a hotel in Atlantic City.

7. 6 Indian-origin students among 8 win US National Spelling Bee

  • Six Indian-origin students are among the eight participants who won the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee after defeating over 550 other contestants in an unprecedented competition in the US.
  • It is the first time in the 94-year history of the competition that more than two co-champions have been named.
  • Rishik Gandhasri, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Rohan Raja, Christopher Serrao and Erin Howard were named as co-champions. Each will receive the full winner's prize of 50,000 US Dollar in cash.
  • The six boys and two girls combined to spell the final 47 words correctly over five consecutive perfect rounds.
  • The 565 contestants ranged in age from 7 to 14 and came from across the US and several other countries, including Canada, Ghana and Jamaica. 
  • The National Bee is a high-profile, high-pressure endurance test as much as a nerd spelling match and spellers spend months preparing for it.

8. Indian-origin Anita Bhatia appointed UN Deputy Executive Director

  • Indian-origin Anita Bhatia has been appointed as the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) for Resource Management, Sustainability and Partnerships.
  • She was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the global body's agency focussed on women empowerment and gender equality.
  • Anita Bhatia had a distinguished career at the World Bank Group, serving in various senior leadership and management positions, both at the headquarters and in the field.
  • Veteran Indian diplomat and a gender equality champion Lakshmi Puri had previously served as the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women.

9. Admiral Karambir Singh takes over as Navy Chief

  • Admiral Karambir Singh took over as the Chief of Naval Staff.
  • He took over from Admiral Sunil Lanba, who retired on 31 May 2019 after four decades of service from the Indian Navy.
  • Mr. Karambir Singh served as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff at the headquarters in New Delhi before moving to Vishakhapatnam last year as the Eastern Naval Commander.
Note:
  • The Chief of the Naval Staff is the commander and the highest-ranking officer in the Indian Navy.

9. PM Modi approves the hike in rates of scholarship under National Defence Fund

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved major changes in the Prime Minister's scholarship scheme under the National Defence Fund.
  • Mr Modi has enhanced rates of scholarship from 2000 rupees per month to 2500 rupees per month for boys and from 2250 rupees per month to 3000 rupees per month for girls.
  • The ambit of the Scholarship Scheme is also extended to the wards of State Police officials who are/were martyred during terror/naxal attacks.
  • The quota of new scholarships forwards of state police officials will be 500 in a year.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs will be the nodal Ministry in this regard.
Note:
  • Under National Defence Fund, major scheme, Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme is being implemented to encourage technical and post-graduate education for the widows and wards of the deceased/ex-service personnel of Armed Forces and Para Military Forces and Railway Protection Force.

10. Rani Rampal to lead Indian Women Hockey squad for FIH Series Finals

  • Hockey India named an 18-member Indian team for the upcoming FIH Women's Series Finals starting in Hiroshima, Japan on the 15th of next month. 
  • Rani Rampal will captain the team and experienced goalkeeper Savita will share the responsibility of Vice-Captain.
  • Indian women's team is grouped in Pool A along with Poland, Uruguay and Fiji.
  • Pool B features 18th Asian Games Gold Medallist Japan, Chile, Russia and Mexico. India will begin their campaign on an opening day against Uruguay.

11. Pakistan to host 2020 Asia Cup

  • Pakistan will host the 15th edition of the 2020 Asia Cup cricket tournament (in September 2020).
  • The matches will be played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in the quadrennial event.
  • In the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, it was also decided that the tournament will be shifted to another venue if diplomatic ties between India (defending champions) and Pakistan do not improve.
  • India had defeated Bangladesh in the final of the previous edition held in the United Arab of Emirates (UAE).
  • ACC also reaffirmed its stand to include cricket in the 2022 Asian Games scheduled in Hangzhou, China.
Note:
  • The 2018 Asia Cup (14th - edition) was a One-Day International (ODI) cricket tournament that was held in the United Arab Emirates in September 2018.
