BANKING & ECONOMY
  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) base year to be changed to 2017-18 and 2018, respectively, during 2019-20.
    • At present, the base year for GDP is 2011-12, while it is 2012 for CPI.
  • ICICI Bank said its mortgage loan portfolio crossed the Rs 1.5-trillion milestone, making it the largest private player in the segment.
  • Yes Bank has received approval from capital markets regulator SEBI to start mutual fund business.
  • The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) developed mobile app ‘GST Verify’ to protect interest of consumers.
  • Union Cabinet has approved extension of scheme of recapitalization of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) for next three years (upto 2019-20).
    • It will enable RRBs to maintain minimum prescribed Capital to Risk Weighted Assets Ratio (CRAR) of 9%.
  • The Sunil Mehta committee, formed with a view to tackle Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) and creating credit capacity, has submitted its report with recommendations to Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal.
    • The panel presented project 'Sashakt' and has recommended a five-pronged strategy to deal with NPAs in the country’s banking system.
  • International Finance Corp. (IFC), the private sector investment arm of the World Bank, has invested $100 million in Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Ltd. (Mahindra Finance).

  • The apex body of Indian IT industry, NASSCOM (National Association of Software & Services Companies) has opened Centre of Excellence for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CoE-DSAI) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • The International Round Table Conference on 'Data for New India' has been inaugurated by D.V. Sadananda Gowda in New Delhi.
  • The Supreme Court in its latest ruling has once again upheld Chief Justice of India (CJI) as 'Master of Roster'.
  • State-owned telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) announced soft launch of its first Internet telephony service Wings in India.
  • Airports Authority of India (AAI) is going to set up state-of-the-art Civil Aviation Research Organization (CARO) at Hyderabad’s Begumpet Airport.
  • The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has declared the 438 sq. km. of area around Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR), Tamil Nadu as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ).
  • According to the recent study by researchers, if Indian farmers make big switch from growing rice and wheat to alternative cereals such as maize, sorghum and millet, it could reduce demand for irrigation water by 33%.

  • The first meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has been held at Central Water Commission (CWC) office in New Delhi to resolve disputes over sharing of river water among Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.
    • The meeting of the 9-member Authority was chaired by the CWC Chairman S Masood Hussain, who is also heading the Cauvery Authority.
  • The Union Govt constituted 13-member Committee for Sub-National Accounts to upgrade the norms for computation of economic data at states and districts level in backdrop of plans to revise the base year for National Accounts or Gross Domestic Production (GDP) calculation.
    • It will be headed by Ravindra H Dholakia, a retired professor of IIM Ahmedabad.
