1. India's Bharat Vatwani, Sonam Wangchuk among Magsaysay award 2018

  • Two Indians ‘Bharat Vatwani’ and ‘Sonam Wangchuk’are among six who have been declared winners of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award.
  • Bharat Vatwani (psychiatrist) who works for mentally-ill people living on the streets.
  • Sonam Wangchuk, known for his reforms in the education sector in Ladakh, started a movement to help poor village student clear examinations.
  • Youk Chhang (Cambodia), Maria de Lourdes Martins Cruz (East Timor), Howard Dee (Philippines) and Vo Thi Hoang Yen rom (Vietnam) are other winners of the award.
 Note:
  • The Ramon Magsaysay Award named after Ramon Magsaysay, the seventh President of the Philippines.
  • The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation gives the prize to Asian individuals achieving excellence in their respective fields.
  • Acharya Vinoba Bhave was the first Indian to win this award in 1958.
  • The award is internationally-recognized as Asia's Nobel Prize counterpart and is the highest award given to Asian individuals and organizations.

2.  Thaawarchand Gehlot attends Global disability summit 2018 in London

  • The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment ‘Thaawarchand Gehlot’ has attended the Global Disability Summit in London, UK.
  • The motto of the Conference was to firm up the commitments of the country leaders towards the cause of persons with disabilities.
  • The participants in the summit appreciated the efforts of the Government of India towards empowerment and inclusion of PwDs.
  • The Global leaders expressed their commitments towards elimination stigma and discrimination, promoting inclusive education, economic empowerment, technology and innovation in assistive devices, data desegregation etc.

3. Veteran Sports Journalist Swapan Sarkar passes away

  • Veteran sports journalist Swapan Sarkar (67-year) passed away due to diabetic complications.
  • In mid-1990's, He was also the Delhi sports correspondent of Ananda Bazaar Patrika (ABP).

4. West Bengal Assembly passes a resolution to rename State as ‘Bangla’

  • The West Bengal Assembly has passed a resolution to rename the State as ‘Bangla’ in three languages ‘Bengali’, ‘English’ and ‘Hindi’.
  • The move is aimed at climbing the alphabetical sequence of State names in which West Bengal appears last in the list now.
  • The State will have to wait for the nod from the Union Home Ministry for the final approval of the resolution.
Note:
  • When the fresh proposal comes to the Home Ministry, it will prepare a note for the Union Cabinet for an amendment to the Schedule 1 of the Constitution.
  • Thereafter, a Constitution Amendment Bill will be introduced in Parliament, which has to approve it with a simple majority, before the President gives his assent to it.

5. Govt extends the deadline for ITR filing to 31st August

  • The Union Government has extended the due date for filing income tax returns for certain taxpayers till 31st August 2018.
  • Earlier the date for filing income tax returns for the assessment Year 2018-19, was 31st of this month.

6. HRD Minister calls for increasing Gross Enrolment Rate from in coming years

  • The Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar has chaired a three-day National Conference of Vice-chancellors and Directors in New Delhi.
  • It is time to show India's prowess to the world in the field of education.
  • The country hosts many world-class educators who are working in silos and they need to break walls and come forward to share their knowledge.
  • He professed for academic freedom and increasing the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education from 26% to 40% in the coming years to match with the developed countries.

7. Panel to review third-party motor cover costs

  • The Insurance regulator IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority) has constituted a 16-member committee to examine motor third party insurance pricing aspects and make recommendations on the premium rates for 2019-20.
  • This is for the first time the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has formed such a committee.
  • IRDAI Member P.J. Joseph will be the chairman of the committee.

8. September to be celebrated as National Nutrition month every year

  • Under the Chairmanship of Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India has organized 2nd meeting of National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) in New Delhi.
  • September-2018 will be celebrated as National Nutrition Month and this will be celebrated every year.
  • On 8th March 2018, the Government of India has set-up POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) which was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

9. Karnataka overtakes Tamil Nadu in renewable energy

  • According to the US-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) report, Karnataka is the new national leader in renewable energy generation.
  • It has overtaken Tamil Nadu that had long been India's top renewables market.
  • Karnataka has a sum of 12.3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity installed till March 2018, after having added five GW in 2017-18 alone.

10. Unicef International Children's Film festival in Kolkata to host 32 films

  • The West Bengal Governor ‘K N Tripathi’ has inaugurated the 18th International Children's Film Festival in Kolkata.
  • Bouquet of 32 offerings from 17 countries would be screened.
  • The Governor also called for screening of one children's film in every cinema hall of the state every month.
  • The festival was being organised by Cine Central in collaboration with the UNICEF.
