1. National Statistics Day 2018 observed in India

  • The “Statistics Day” is being observed every year on 29th June in India to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.
  • The day acknowledges the notable contribution of Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics, statistical system and economic planning.
  • The 2018 theme is “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics”.
Note:
  • Indian scientist and applied statistician ‘Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis’ (29 June 1893 – 28 June 1972) remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure.
  • He was also one of the members of the first Planning Commission of India.
  • He founded the Indian Statistical Institute and contributed to the design of large-scale sample surveys.

2. Sonakshi Sinha joins UNESCO to promote safe cyberspace for kids

  • Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has joined forces with UNESCO to promote a safe and secure cyber environment for youngsters to ensure they are not targeted for bullying, abuse, exploitation and more through the internet.
  • According to Sonakshi Sinha, it will equip boys and girls to be prepared to report any type of abuse or exploitation.
Note:
  • UNESCO has (195-member states and ten associate members) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) based in Paris.
  • UNESCO's aim is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.

3. NITI Aayog's WEP signs SoI with financial institutions & social organisations

  • NITI Aayog’s Women Entrepreneurs Platform has signed five Statements of Intent (SoIs) with financial institutions and social organisations to provide assistance to women entrepreneurs.
  • The SoIs were inked with Shri Mahila Sewa Sahakari Bank Limited, Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited, SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited, Sreemanta Sankar Mission and the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA).
  • The WEP aims to create opportunities and support women to help them realise their entrepreneurial aspirations, scale up innovative initiatives, and chalk out sustainable and long-term strategies for their businesses.
  • The WEP was established in March 2018 to substantially increase the number of women entrepreneurs who will create and empower a dynamic New India.

4. Ayush Ministry to introduce Ayurvedic medicine as a subject for Sanskrit students

  • According to the Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Ayush Ministry is in the process of introducing Ayurvedic medicine as a subject for Sanskrit students.
  • This will help in identifying the medicines and ayurvedic practices from the Sanskrit scriptures that are unexplored.
  • The students who have completed Plus Two in Sanskrit will be introduced to Ayurveda as a subject.

5. Ministry of Women and Child Development organises POSHAN Abhiyaan TECH-THON

  • The union ministry of Woman and Child Development organized a day-long Seminar on Technology Partnerships for Steering POSHAN Abhiyaan called 'TECH-THON'.
  • Now, Effective monitoring and Timely interventions along with the use of the Specially designed software will surely help achieve the target of Poshan Abhiyan.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan was launched by the Prime Minister on 8th March 2018 in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.
  • ICDS- Common Application Software has been specially designed to strengthen the Service Delivery System as well as the mechanism for Real-Time Monitoring for nutritional outcomes.

6. Rajnath approves 'Home Minister's Special Operation Medal' for police

  • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has approved the institution of "Home Minister's Special Operation Medal".
  • The Police Officers of States & Union Territories, Central Police Organisations (CPOs), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Security Organisation involved in Special Operations will be eligible.
  • The Union Home Minister has also instituted three more Medals the Antarik Suraksha Medal, Asadharan Aashuchan Padak and Utkrisht & Ati-Utkrisht Seva Medal.

7. FM to come up with a mechanism to identify wrong input tax credit claims under GST regime

  • According to Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, the Union Finance Ministry will come up with a mechanism to identify wrong input tax credit claims under GST regime and unearth tax evasion worth 40 thousand crore rupees.
  • The government is coming up with the mechanism to fill the gaps through use of IT to match invoices and identify wrong claims.
  • There may be a case of 10% wrong input credit claim out of four lakh crore rupees of claims raised per month.
  • The move is part of the government's efforts to broaden its returns and further curb tax evasion.
  • GST collection for the month of April has reached one lakh 3 thousand 458 crore rupees.
  • Finance Ministry is also planning to come up with a new GSTR form starting January 1 next year.

8. Fourth National Consultation meeting held in New Delhi

  • The union minister of Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan chaired the fourth National Consultation Meeting of Ministers of States & UTs in New Delhi.
  • The objective of the meeting is to the discussion on measures required to maintain and manage prices of essential food items at the reasonable level through appropriate policy intervention. 
  • Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) as an instrument to tackle inflationary trends in important agri-horticultural commodities and the need for setting up of State Level PSF for addressing the state-specific concerns would also be discussed.

9. Madhya Pradesh to be awarded for reducing maternal mortality

  • Madhya Pradesh has been awarded for reducing maternal mortality under Prime Minister's Safe Motherhood Campaign in New Delhi.
  • As per the report of the Registrar General of India (from 2014 to 2016), Madhya Pradesh has been registered an unprecedented 48-digit decline in maternal deaths
  • There has been a significant decline of 22% in the last three years in the state.
Note:
  • The Prime Minister’s Safe Motherhood Campaign has been launched to ensure quality care of over 3 crore pregnant women of the country before delivery.

10. NASA postpones James Webb Space Telescope launch to 202

  • The NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) space agency has delayed the launch of its flagship highly anticipated James Webb Space Telescope by another ten months (earlier scheduled May 2020) due to some technical challenges.
  • The move follows the recommendation by an Independent Review Board (IRB) established by NASA to assess progress on the world’s premier science observatory.
  • Now, the project’s development cost has risen from USD 8 billion to USD 8.8 billion and its total lifecycle price at USD 9.66 billion.
Note:
  • Webb is a multipurpose observatory that will allow astronomers to study some of the first stars and galaxies in the universe, hunt for possible signs of life in the atmospheres of nearby alien planets among other works.
