  • India's private sector lender, HDFC Bank has launched Interactive Robotic Assistant (IRA) 2.0, an interactive humanoid at its Koramangala Branch in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has tightened Know Your Customer (KYC) rules for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) from ‘high risk’ jurisdictions and also from People of Indian Origin (PIOs) who control an FPI.
  • IT firm Cognizant has acquired privately-held Belgium based Hedera Consulting, a move that will strengthen the former’s consulting and digital transformation capabilities for clients in Belgium and then Netherlands.

  • The 27th meeting of GST Council chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has approved the proposal of converting GST Network (GSTN) into govt entity from current private entity status by taking over stakes held by private entities.
  • The 4th Regional Conference on ‘Futuristic, Resilient and Digital Infrastructure’ has been held in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has launched initiative of online professional development of 1.5 million higher education faculty using massive open online course (MOOC) platform SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active –Learning for Young Aspiring Minds).
  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has conducted National Conference of 244 Districts under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) in New Delhi.
  • The Ministry of Power has launched Pilot Scheme for Procurement of Aggregate Power of 2500 MW on competitive basis for 3 years.
  • The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in the holy city of Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) from Jan 21 to Jan 23, 2019 with the theme "Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India".
  • The 9th India Japan Energy Dialogue held in New Delhi.

  • Maharashtra becomes the first Indian state to provide digitally-signed land record receipts (also known as 7/12 receipts).
  • Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning of another dust storm and thunderstorm in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
  • The Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation launched GOBAR (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources) – DHAN scheme at National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal, Haryana.

  • The first-ever India-South Africa Business Summit (ISABS 2018) has been held at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa with the Summit was "United by Legacy, Unified for Prosperity".
  • The 12th edition of the bilateral border trade between India and China from Nathu La border in Sikkim has resumed for the scheduled period from May 1 to Nov 30.
SCIENCE & DEFENCE

  • The philanthropic arm of Google, Google.org has announced additional grants of $3 million to two Indian non-profit organisations – Central Square Foundation and The Teacher App.
  • China has successfully launched 'APSTAR-6C', a new communication satellite into orbit.
  • Indian and French navies have conducted final and third phase of Varuna naval exercise 2018 near Reunion Island in Indian Ocean region (IOR) to enhance their operational coordination.
  • Scientists have found that global warming is driving proliferation of Noctiluca algae (commonly known as sea tinkle), a harmful algae in Arabian Sea responsible for glowing of Mumbai’s beaches in dark.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its first-ever mission InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) to study the deep interior of Mars on May 5, 2018.
