Daniel Ricciardo wins Monaco Grand Prix

  • Daniel Ricciardo, an Australian F1 Driver won the Monaco Grand Prix.
  • Daniel Ricciardo drove a masterful race to fend off Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and win the Monaco Grand Prix.
  • Daniel Riccardo belongs to Red Bull Racing Team.
  • Vettel shaved a few points off championship leader Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes finished third.
  • The championship is still lead by Lewis Hamilton, who 14 points ahead of rival Sebastian Vettel with Daniel Ricciardo at the third spot to complete the top three.
Note: Sebastian Vettel, a German Racer runs for Ferrari Team. Lewis Hamilton, a British Driver runs for Mercedes Team.

Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to win IPL 2018

  • Chennai Super Kings won the IPL XI by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad. This is the third IPL win of Chennai Super Kings. 
  • Shane Watson was named 'Man of the Match' for his 117 runs which played a vital role in chasing the target set by Sunrisers Hyderabad. 
  • Rishabh Pant is declared as the Emerging Player of IPL XI.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 to win Champions League

  • The Read Madrid Forward Player Gareth Bale scored twice including an incredible overhead kick after coming off the bench as Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1 in the Champions League final in Kiev.
  • The Welshman sealed a record-extending 13th European Cup title for Real Madrid.
  • For Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, it was a disappointment again - he lost his third successive final since arriving at Anfield, having suffered defeats in the League Cup and Europa League finals of 2016.
Note: The UEFA Champions League is an annual continental club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs.

National Affairs

Government notifies 8.55% interest on PF for 2017-18, lowest in 5 years.

  • The Retirement Fund Body has lowered the Provident Fund’s rate of interest to 8.55 percent for 2017-18, the lowest rate since 2012-13 fiscal, into the PF accounts of around 5 crore subscribers.
  • The EPFO's Central Board of Trustees, headed by the labour minister, had decided to fix the rate of interest at 8.55 percent for the last fiscal in its meeting held on February 21, 2018.
  • The EPFO had provided 8.65 percent interest for 2016-17. The members got 8.8 percent in 2015-16 and 8.75 percent each in 2014-15 and 2013-14.
  • In 2012-13, EPFO had provided 8.5 percent rate of interest on EPF. Thus, at 8.55 percent for 2017-18, it is a five-year low.
Note: The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (abbreviated to EPFO), is an Organization tasked to assist the Central Board of Trustees, a statutory body formed by the Employees' Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952 and is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.

New governors appointed for Odisha, Mizoram

  • Prof. Ganeshi Lal is appointed as Governor of Odisha. Ganeshi Lal will take over as the new governor of Odisha, a post which had fallen vacant in March this year after veteran Naga leader S C Jamir completed his tenure. He is a former Haryana BJP chief.
  • Kummanam Rajasekharan is appointed as Governor of Mizoram. He will be replacing Lt. General (Retd.) Nirbhay Sharma, who is completing his tenure on May 28, 2018. He was appointed as the Kerala BJP chief in 2015.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opens two Expressways in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicates the country's first smart and green highway: The Eastern Peripheral Expressway at Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, connecting Kundli to Palwal in Haryana.
  • PM also inaugurates the Phase 1 of India's first 14-lane Expressway from Delhi to Meerut. The 9 km long 1st Phase of Delhi Meerut Expressway has been constructed in record time taking only 18 months, well before the time decided of 30 months. There are total 4 phases covering 90 kms in all. The remaining three phases are likely to be completed by next year.
  • PM Narendra Modi quoted this achievement as “Dreams of development, Dreams of Employment, dreams of empowerment and Dreams of New India”.
Note: 27-km highways being built every day as compared to 12-km previously.

BJP will launch a massive ‘Sampark for Samarthan’ campaign to create awareness about the noble works done during the last four years by the Narendra Modi Government.

  • All party workers including BJP President Amit Shah and booth level workers will take part in the campaign.
  • There will also be a special session of Sampark for Samarthan on the NaMo App to help the workers under the initiative.

  • To promote India’s rich cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture has organised 3 days long diversified cultural festival ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav’ festival which was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Shri Trivendra Singh Rawat, Near Tehri Lake, Uttarakhand.
  • Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav is strengthening the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat’s vision which will provide an opportunity to citizens especially youths to experience the true spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat.
  • Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav was conceived by the Ministry of Culture in the year 2015, to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Country in all its rich and varied dimensions, viz Handicrafts, Cuisine, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Documentation and Performing Arts-Folk, Tribal, Classical and Contemporary- all in one place.

International Affairs

Barbados, an island country, elects Mia Mottley as first woman PM. 

  • Barbados, an island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean region of North America has elected its first woman prime minister since gaining independence from Britain in 1966.
  • Mia Mottley led her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to a crushing victory over the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
  • The BLP has defeated DLP, that governed the popular tourist paradise for the past 10 years, most recently under Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.
  • The key challenges for the newly elected PM are to revive the sluggish economy, reduce the government debt and more importantly to uplift the shrinking foreign currency reserves.
