ISRO has successfully launched a rocket carrying India’s 100th satellite

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched 31 satellites in a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The 31 satellites with a combined weight of 1,323 kilograms have been integrated with the PSLV-C40 for deploying them in the earth's lower orbit after lift-off.
  • Twenty-eight of the 30 small satellites are from six foreign countries including Canada, Finland, France, South Korea, the UK and the USA while the two are from the ISRO.
  • The Indian satellites are 710 kg Cartosat-2 series for Earth observation, a 100 kgs microsatellite and a five kg nanosatellite.
  • The Cartosat series of satellites are a type of earth observation satellites indigenously built by India.

12th January being observed as National Youth Day

  • National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12th January on the birthday of social reformer, philosopher and thinker Swami Vivekananda (155th).
  • Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the five-day National Youth Festival in Greater Noida through Video conferencing.
  • The event will provide a platform to bring the youth of the country together and opportunity to showcase their talents in various activities.
  • The Theme of the Festival is Sankalp Se Siddhi, to capitalize on the demographic dividend of young India, to capture the vibrancy and fresh perspective of youth and to pledge to accomplish the goal of New India.
Note:
  • Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 and died on 4 July 1902.
  • He was the chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and the founder of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission.
  • He was one of the most prominent figures of India who introduced Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the 'Western' World.

Railways launches SFOORTI App for freight managers

  • Indian Railways have launched Smart Freight Operation Optimisation and Real Time Information (SFOORTI) app for freight managers.
  • The app provides features for monitoring and managing freight business using Geographic Information System(GIS), Views and Dashboard.
  • Now, with this app trains (passenger and freight) can be tracked over Zones, Divisions, and Sections in single GIS View.
  • Expected traffic at interchange points can be viewed to evaluate daily performance and position of rakes for a specific type of stock can be viewed through this application.

Punjab rolls out e-Raktkosh web portal in all 45 government blood banks

  • According to the Punjab State Health Minister Brahm Mahindra, the state has rolled out e-Raktkosh web portal in all the 45 government blood banks.
  • The web portal provides the guidelines and streamlines the workflow of blood blanks and storage centers across the nation and interconnects all blood banks with a single network.
  • In the next phase all 59 private blood banks of the state will be linked with the e-Raktkosh application software.

Niti Aayog to provide rankings to 115 aspirational districts

  • The government think-tank ‘Niti Aayog’ will provide rankings to the 115 aspirational districts.
  • The ranking will be on 10 parameters which will include nutrition, education, and health among others.
  • It will also set up a mechanism for real-time monitoring of government's development programmes by April 2018.
  • ‘Niti Aayog’ will create a dashboard which will reflect the change in the ranking of districts on continuous basis by the end of March this year.

India tops domestic air traffic demand at 16.4% in November: IATA

  • According to the Global aviation body, International Air Transport Association (IATA), India's domestic air passenger traffic grew by 4% in November 2017 (topping the growth chart worldwide).
  • India continued to witness double-digit growth for the 39th consecutive month, comprising major air carriers.
  • Globally, the total revenue passenger km increased 8% compared to November 2016, the fastest growth rate in five months.

SC asks Centre, TN, Kerala govt to set up panels on Mullaperiyar dam

  • The Supreme Court (SC) bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra has directed the Centre and the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to set up three separate committees to exclusively deal with any unpredictable disaster that may occur at the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala.
  • The apex court clarified that the proposed panels would only deal with the disaster aspect of the dam.
  • Over three million residents who live near the dam are in constant fear that any disaster may hit them in near future.

  • He was the national president of the famous story writer and the People's Author Association.
  • Singh was honored with the highest literary honor of Uttar Pradesh, Bharat Bharati, Madhyilitharan Gupta Award, Shikhar Samman of Madhya Pradesh Government.

IOA appoints Harjinder Singh as 'Chef de Mission' for winter Olympics 2018

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has appointed Harjinder Singh as the Chef De Mission for the 23rd Winter Olympic Games to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018.
  • Currently, Harjinder Singh is the General Secretary in the Ice Hockey Association of India.

  • Professional player Aditya Mehta has won the Kolkata Open 2018 International Invitation Snooker Championship in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • He defeated Englishman Professional Player Alfie Burden.
  • This is his third Kolkata Open title since it’s inception.
