Vidarbha grab Ranji Trophy Title 2017

  • Vidarbha secured the win by defeating Delhi in the finals of Ranji Trophy at Holkar Stadium in Indore.
  • They secured the win by defeating Delhi by 9 wickets. This was their maiden Ranji trophy victory.
  • Here are the details of the scores:
    (a) Delhi: 295 and 280 all out in second innings
    (b) Vidarbha: 547 all out in first innings and 32/1 on Day 4.
  • The Vidarbha team was led to their maiden victory under the captainship of Faiz Fazal.

Arunachal Pradesh declared Open Defecation Free (ODF).

  • After Sikkim in North East, Arunachal Pradesh has become the 2nd state to be granted the status of ODF.
  • An official press release declared the districts of Upper Subansiri, Siang and Changlang as open defecation free.
  • AP government had extended an incentive of Rs. 8000/- per toilet in addition to the central government’s incentive of Rs. 12,000/- per toilet, in order to achieve this feat way before the deadline set by the central government (i.e. 2nd October 2019).
  • The State government had earlier launched Swachh Arunachal Mission at Tawang on the 2nd of October in order to ensure sustainability of assets created under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM Gramin).

‘Allied and Healthcare Professionals’ database portal’ launched by Central Government.

  • In order to ensure better systems and frameworks for the healthcare workforce of the country, ‘Allied and Healthcare Professionals’ database portal’ was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • At the launch, Ms. Preeti Sudan, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, announced that more than 3000 professionals have already registered on the portal during the testing phase.
  • The link to the website portal is a2hp.mohfw.gov.in.
  • The portal will help the Government in tracking down the number of professionals and streams of allied and healthcare professions in the country.

Telangana government launches 24-hours free power supply for farmers.

  • Telangana government has introduced a free 24x7 free power supply scheme for the farmers of the state.
  • The free power supply scheme was launched at Pothaipalli village in Medchal Malkajgiri district of Telangana and was introduced as the New year’s gift by Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
  • The power supply would be available to the 2.3 million farmers of the state for agricultural purpose.

India’s 2nd largest Rooftop Solar Plant set up by GAIL in UP.

  • GAIL, formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited, has commissioned the second largest rooftop power plant project at its petrochemical complex at Pata in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The 5.76 MWp (Mega Watt peak) solar plant covers an area of 65000 square meters over the roofs of warehouses.
  • The first solar rooftop project of 12 MW was commissioned by Tata Solar Power in Amritsar.

India signs loan agreement of USD 40 Million with World Bank.

  • A loan agreement of USD 40 Million was signed by India with the World Bank for U.P. Pro-Poor Tourism Development Project.
  • The agreement was signed by the Joint Secretary (MI) of Department of Economic Affairs, Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, on behalf of the Government of India and Acting Country Director of the World Bank (India), Mr. John Blomquist.
  • World Bank will finance USD 40 million of the 5-year programme, which will cost approximately USD 57.14 million and the remaining amount of the project will be funded out of the state budget.

‘Whistle Language’ of Turkish Village enters UNESCO list.

  • The ‘Whistle Language’ of Kuskoy, a village in Turkey, has been included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
  • The language is considered to be roughly 500 years old.
  • Also known as the ‘Bird Language’, it is used by the villagers for the purpose communication in the remote and mountainous northern Turkey.
  • The language consists of more than 400 words and phrases.

Arsene Wenger sets a new record of managing most Premier leagues.

  • Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager has set a new record by managing his 811th Premier League match against West Brom.
  • Wenger broke the record of the former manager of Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, who had managed 810 premier league matches.
  • 468 matches were won out of the total 811 and 145 lost under the management of Arsene Wenger.

India and Pakistan exchange the list of Nuclear Installations.

  • India and Pakistan exchanged their 27th list of Nuclear Installations with the help of diplomatic channels on Monday.
  • As per the press release of External Affairs Ministry, the lists were exchanged under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations between India and Pakistan.
  • As per the statement of the foreign ministry, this agreement was initially signed on 31st December 1988, and entered into force on 27th January 1991.

VAT introduced for the first time in Saudi Arabia and UAE.

  • Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have introduced VAT (Value Added Tax) of 5% on all the major goods and services for the first time.
  • The move aims to diversify the revenue generation of the countries, from sources other than oil.
  • UAE is expected to raise around $3.3 billion from this tax.
  • Transport (including air travel), Domestic rent, Schooling, and Healthcare will be excluded from the VAT.

Vijay Keshav Gokhale appointed as the new Foreign Secretary.

  • Vijay Keshav Gokhale, a senior diplomat and 1981 batch officer of Indian Foreign Service (IFS) has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary for a period of 2 years.
  • Keshav will succeed  S Jaishankar, whose tenure ends on 28th January 2018.
  • Gokhale has also served as India's envoy to China and currently is working as the Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

Famous Urdu poet Anwar Jalalpuri passes away 

Famous Urdu poet Anwar Jalalpuri, who had translated Bhagwad Geeta into Urdu in Shayari format, died of cardiac arrest at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) at the age of 71.
