Pradeep Singh Kharola appointed Air India CMD

  • Senior IAS officer Pradeep Singh Kharola (Karnataka cadre) has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Air India.
  • Mr. Kharola would replace Rajiv Bansal (interim CMD for last three month).
  • Currently, Mr. Kharola is the Managing Director (MD) of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.
Note:
  • Air India is the flag carrier airline of India, owned by Air India Limited and operates a fleet of Airbus & Boeing aircraft serving 90 domestic and international destinations.
  • Air India's mascot is the Maharajah (Emperor) and the logo consists of a flying swan with the wheel of Konark inside it.

Snehlata Shrivastava appointed Lok Sabha Secretary General

  • Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has approved the appointment of Senior IAS officer Snehlata Shrivastava (1982 batch: Madhya Pradesh cadre) as new Secretary-General of Lok Sabha.
  • She will replace Anoop Mishra.
  • Snehlata will be the first woman Secretary-General of Lok Sabha.
  • Currently, Snehlata working as Secretary Law in Central government.

Noted Malayalam actor and mimicry artist Kalabhavan Abi passes away

  • Noted mimicry artist and actor Kalabhavan Abi (52-years) passed away in Kochi.
  • Kalabhavan Abi performance as an aged Muslim lady named ‘Amina Thatha’ made him a household name and also acted in around 50 films.
  • His son Shane Nigam is also a popular film actor.

Two-days annual SCO meeting begins in Russian city of Sochi

  • Today, the annual meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) begins in the Russian city of Sochi.
  • The External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will represent India in the two-day summit which is likely to discuss regional security scenario, including situations in the Gulf and Afghanistan.
  • She will also attend the reception to be hosted by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
  • In June, India and Pakistan had become full-fledged members of the grouping.

India donates 500 tonnes of rice to Lesotho

  • India donated 500 metric tonnes of rice to the Kingdom of Lesotho (in Southern Africa), which is facing acute food shortage due to famine.
  • High Commissioner of India to South Africa and Lesotho, Ruchira Kamboj handed over the donation to the government of Lesotho.
  • He also inaugurated the India-Lesotho Centre for Advanced Information Technology, a project fully-funded by the Government of India, at the Lerotholi Polytechnic in Maseru.

Govt asks exporters to file Table 6A & GSTR 3B for processing of IGST refund

  • According to the Finance ministry, exporters to file Table 6A & GSTR 3B for processing of IGST refund and for a refund of the unutilized input tax credit.
  • The quantum of IGST refund claims as filed through Shipping Bills during the period July to October this year is approximately Rs. 6,500 crores.
  • The quantum of refund of unutilized credit on inputs or input services as per the GSTN portal is to the tune of Rs. 30 crores.

Delhi govt starts distribution of 10,000 autorickshaw permits

  • The Delhi govt has stated the process of distributing 10,000 autorickshaw permits along with registration certificates.
  • The permits are being allotted to those having a valid driving licence and autorickshaw badges.
  • The process of selection of eligible candidates for granting auto permits was earlier finalised online by the Transport Department.
  • The applications were shortlisted according to seniority in terms of driving licence.

IITs, NIT get Rs 2,066 crore from Higher Education Funding Agency

  • The Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) has approved interest-free loans of more than Rs 2,000 crore for five Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), a National Institute of Technology (NIT) Karnataka, to boost research & academic centres and related infrastructure.
  • The IITs in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kharagpur and Kanpur, and NIT Surathkal were being aided with a total of Rs 2,066 crore.
  • Now, 50% of the total amount has been granted for projects related to research & academic facilities, while the rest has been approved for related infrastructure.
Note:
  • HEFA will mobilize the fund through market borrowing and will release the same to the government institution as interest- free loans.
  • The HEFA was born out of the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing additional finance for promoting research in the higher educational institutions. 

Odisha CM unveils logo & mascot of Hockey World Cup 2018

  • Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik has unveiled Logo and mascot of Hockey World Cup 2018 at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
  • As many as 16 countries, including hosts India, will participate in the 14th edition of the Hockey World Cup.
  • CM Patnaik has also launched the countdown timer for the international event scheduled to be held in Bhubaneshwar late next year.

Chhattisgarh Govt. bans bursting of firecrackers in six of its cities

  • The Chhattisgarh Govt. has imposed a ban on the bursting of firecrackers in six of its cities from 1st December to 31st January.
  • The decision has been taken to control the pollution, which increases during winters due to the direction of the wind.
  • The Cities are Raipur, Bilaspur, Bhilai, Durg, Raigarh, and Korba.

IOA formally recognizes Boxing Federation of India

  • The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has recognized as a national body by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • Earlier, The BFI recognized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and the Sports Ministry.
  • The Sports Ministry had earlier barred IABF from representing India as it was no longer a national federation.
  • The IOA's decision is expected to end the IABF's attempts at reviving itself.

Mirabai Chanu wins gold medal at World Weightlifting Championship

  • Today, Mirabai Chanu has become the first Indian in over two decades to claim a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA.
  • She lifted 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk to total an impressive 194kg in the women's 48kg.
  • Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleshwari had won the top prize in worlds twice in 1994 and 1995.
