Richard Thaler wins 2017 Nobel prize in economics

  • The Nobel economics prize 2017 has been awarded to Richard Thaler (72-years)of the University of Chicago for his contributions to behavioural economics.
  • Thaler is an American economist & the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
  • The 9-million-kronor (1.1 million US Dollars) prize was awarded to the academic for his understanding the psychology of economics.
  • Behavioural economics, a research field in which insights from psychological research are applied to economic decision making.
  • The laureates will collect them on 10th December, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel's death in 1896.

Indian Air Force celebrates 85th anniversary

  • Air Force Day 2017 is being observed annually on 8th October across India.
  • This is the 85th celebration of the Day that began in 1932.
  • The Indian Air Force has displayed various Aircraft at Air Force Station Hindan air base near Delhi with parade and air display.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian armed forces.
  • It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire and the prefix Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services during World War II.

World Post Day is being observed today

  • World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9th October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.
  • It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969.
  • Since then, countries around the world participate annually in the celebrations.

Prime Minister launches Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI)

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) at Vadnagar in Gujarat.
  • Through this programme, the union govt. aims to reach each & every child under two years of age and all those pregnant women who have been left uncovered under the routine immunization programme.
  • The special drive will focus on improving immunization coverage in select districts and cities to ensure full immunization to more than 90% by December 2018.
Note:
  • Mission Indradhanush is a health mission of the government of India launched by Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda on 25 December 2014.
  • It aims to immunize all children under the age of 2 years, as well as all pregnant women, against seven vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • In 2016, four new additions have been made namely Rubella, Japanese Encephalitis, Injectable Polio Vaccine Bivalent, and Rotavirus.

India's first portal dedicated to para-sports launched

  • The country's first portal ‘thenationspride.com’ dedicated to para-sports has been launched to create awareness about para-sports.
  • It will provide a platform to para sportspersons to narrate their stories of triumph and adversity.
  • The portal is a non-profit initiative, helmed by a Mumbai student and sports enthusiast Saachi Munot (17-year-old).
Note: The portal brings readers inspiring stories of Indian para-sportspersons, who have consistently delivered stellar performances on domestic and global arenas alike, but whose stories have largely gone untold or unheard.

President launches Mata Amritanandamayi Math Project Jeevamritham in Kerala

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has launched 100 crore rupees Mata Amritanandamayi Math Project "Jeevamritham" to provide a filtration system for cleaning drinking water to 5000 villages across India, in Kollam district in Kerala.
  • The President also distributed the certificates to three villages out of 12 villages in the States of Bihar, UP, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, and Kerala (adopted by the Math), verified as Open Defecation Free by Swatch Bharat Abhiyan.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind also bestowed certificates to 5 out of 1940 free surgeries held at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research center in Kochi.

Special immunization drive in UP for children up to 5 years begins today

  • A special immunization drive for children up to 5 years of age has begun in 60 districts of the Uttar Pradesh state under Intensified Indradhanush.
  • It will be conducted by January next year and in every month immunization drive will be conducted for seven days.
  • In 8 districts including Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Gorakhpur and Kanpur drive will focus on urban areas and in remaining 52 districts both urban and rural areas will be covered.
  • Under the mission, 90% targeted unvaccinated and partially vaccinated children will be given vaccines and boosters against the life-threatening diseases including Polio, Diphtheria, Pneumonia, Whooping Cough, Tetanus and Japanese Encephalitis.
  • As per UNICEF reports every second child in the State is not fully immunized and it exposes them to life-threatening diseases.
Note: In 2014, Mission Indradhanush was launched as a special drive to vaccinate every last child in unreached areas.

RBI to launch financial literacy drive in 9 states

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will launch a financial literacy drive in 80 blocks in nine states on pilot basis to educate people on e-transactions, formal sector borrowings, and insurance purchases.
  • The pilot project will be commissioned in the 9 states of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh by the 6 NGOs in collaboration with the sponsor banks.
  • The aim of the CFL is to inculcate the habit of making a household budget and recording financial transactions, encourage transactions in savings accounts, and active saving by depositing in banks through fixed deposits and recurring deposits.

Samiya wins gold at U-15 Asian Junior Championship

  • Indian shuttler Samiya Imad Farooqui clinched the gold medal at the Under-15 women's singles competition at the Asian Junior Championship in Yangon, Myanmar.
  • She defeated Indonesia's Widjaja Stephani 15-21, 21-17, 21-19.
  • Earlier, P V Sindhu had won the gold in U-19 Asia Junior championship in 2012 at Gimcheon, South Korea.

Gurusaidutt wins Bulgarian International

  • Commonwealth Games bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt has won the men's singles title at the Bulgarian International Future Series tournament.
  • Gurusaidutt defeated Muhammed Ali Kurt 21- 17, 21-16.

India's Anupama Ramachandran wins World Open U-16 Snooker Championship

  • Anupama Ramachandran (India) has won the World Open Under-16 Snooker Championship title at St. Petersburg in Russia.
  • In the Girls category, she defeated top seed Keerthana Pandian 3-1.
  • In boy category, Dylan Emery of Wales has claimed the title.
  • Total 73 cueists from across the world have participated in this championship.
Note: Federation of Billiards Sports of Russia hosted this first-ever World Open championships for Under-16 boys and girls.

Rafael Nadal wins 2107 China 0pen title

  • Top-ranked 16-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal (Spain) has won 2017 China 0pen title in Beijing.
  • Rafael Nadal defeated Nick Kyrgios (Australia) 6-2, 6-1 to win his 6th ATP title of the year.
  • In the women’s event, Caroline Garcia (France) defeated world no.1 Simona Halep(Romania) in straight sets of 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Note: The China Open is an annual men's and women's professional tennis tournament held in Beijing, China.
