Shashi Shekar Vempati has been appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Prasar Bharati for a period of five years on the recommendation of the three-member committee headed by the Vice-President Hamid Ansari.
He will replace Rajeev Singh (interim CEO).
Currently, Mr. Vempati is serving as a member (part time) of the Prasar Bharati Board.
He will be the first non-Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer to head the public broadcaster.

Vempati is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and worked in Infosys for more than a decade as Product Strategist.
He has over two decades of experience in areas like Corporate Management, Technology Consulting, and Digital Media.
Leo Varadkar to be next Irish PM
An Indian-origin doctor Leo Varadkar (38-year) is set to become the Republic of Ireland's next Prime Minister after winning the leadership of the Fine Gael party.
He will succeed Enda Kenny as leader of the centre-right party.
Varadkar will become the first gay Prime Minister and also be the country's youngest ever leader.
He beat his rival, Simon Coveney (Housing Minister) with 60% of the votes to lead Fine Gael party.
Chanakyapuri road named after late Russian envoy Alexander M Kadakin
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has passed a resolution to rename the city’s ‘The Officers' Mess Road’ in Chanakyapuri area to Alexander M Kadakin Marg.
The Officers' Mess Road is located near Army Battle Honours Mess in Chanakyapuri connecting Sardar Patel Marg with San Martin Marg.
Alexander M Kadakin (67 -year) was born in Chisna, Russia and served as ambassador from 2009 in India until his last breath in January 2017.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra 'Devendra Fadnav' has launched a web portal 'Mahaswayam' for job seekers, employers, entrepreneurs and training institutes.
This web portal will cater to job seekers, employers, entrepreneurs, and training institutes who can avail details regarding skill development and employment.
Entrepreneurs can also post job vacancy advertisements at the portal.
Varanasi to get India’s 1st freight village
The first freight village of India will be developed by the Inland waterways authority of India (IWAI) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
A ‘Freight Village’ is a focused industrial estate that attracts companies requiring logistic services.
It includes an inter-modal terminal that facilitates assimilation between different modes of transport.
SBI, World Bank finance Rs. 400-cr solar projects
State Bank of India (SBI) & the World Bank have announced, they had financed 100 MW of rooftop solar projects worth Rs.400 crores in India.
SBI has availed of a loan of USD 625 million from the World Bank for on-lending to viable Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar PV (GRPV) projects undertaken by developers, aggregators and end-users, for installation of rooftop solar systems.
SBI will support the installation of more than 600 MW of rooftop solar capacity.
Airtel-Telenor merger gets regulatory approval from SEBI, BSE, NSE
Bharti Airtel has received the merger approval between Airtel and Telenor communications from SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India), BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange), National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE).
The Telenor will give Bharti Airtel additional spectrum in 1800 Mhz band besides a foothold in seven circles in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh(East and West) and Maharashtra.
Nitin Kumar Sinha wins boys singles title of HCL Asian Junior Tennis Championship
Indian wild card ‘Nitin Kumar Sinha’ has won the boys singles title of HCL Asian Junior Tennis Championship at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune.
He defeated Christian Didier Chin (Malaysia) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a final match.
Note -Players from 11 countries in the region (Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Hong-Kong, Malaysia, China, Sri Lanka, Iran and India) participated in the tournament.
West Indies cricket team's official name changed to 'WINDIES'
The cricket board for West Indies has re-branded themselves as Cricket West Indies from the former West Indies Cricket board.
The board also announced, the cricket team from now on will be officially known as ‘WINDIES’.
First Indian Pair to reach Quaterfinals in World TT Championships
Indian's Manika Batra and Mouma Das has become the first Indian pair to reach the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships.
They created history with luck on their side as they got a walkover from the Netherlands and Polish combination of Li Jie and Li Quian.
The duo will now take Chinese players Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen in an upcoming match.
