Raman Roy is New Nasscom chairman

  • The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has appointed industry veteran ‘Raman Roy’ as its chairman for 2017-18.
  • He has replaced 'CP Gurnani' (Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tech Mahindra).
  • Rishad Premji (Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), Wipro Limited) has been appointed Vice Chairman of Nasscom.
  • The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) is a trade association of Indian Information Technology (IT) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry.
Note:
  • Raman Roy is one of the pioneers of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in India and CEO of his VC funded BPO company ‘Quatrro’.
  • He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce.


RBI appoints 'Smt. Malvika Sinha' as New Executive Director


  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed‘Smt. Malvika Sinha’ as new Executive Director (ED).
  • She will look after Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Government and Bank Accounts and Internal Debt Management Department.
  • Earlier, B. P. Kanungo was Executive Director of the Reserve Bank before being elevated to the post of Deputy Governor.
  • Sinha joined Reserve Bank in 1982 and as a career central banker served in the areas of regulation and supervision, foreign exchange and Government and Bank Accounts in the Bank.

Note:
  • Malvika Sinha holds a Master Degree from the University of Bombay and has done her Master in Public Administration.
  • She is also a Certificated Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers.

6th April: United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Sport for Development and Peace


  • The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is observed across the world on 6th April every year to recognize the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide.
  • The day has been celebrated each year since 2014.
  • The date commemorates the inauguration of the first Olympic games of the modern era, in Athens (Greece) in 1896.


Ho. Srinivasaiah passes away


  • Gandhian Ho. Srinivasaiah (93-year) passed away in Bengaluru.
  • He headed an organization ‘the Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi’ for nearly four decades.


India-UAE cultural celebrations festival launched at Abu Dhabi


  • The India & UAE cultural celebrations festival has been launched in Abu Dhabi with a tribute video featuring the Mahatma Gandhi and late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
  • The video took the audience through a journey of shared values, pluralism, and multiculturalism between the two nations.
  • India-UAE Cultural Celebrations is a cultural partnership for a positive future is a cultural engagement programme between India and the United Arab Emirates.
  • The programme supported by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, UAE and the Indian Business and Professional Group.


Haryana government to provide Rs 21,000 to families for third girl child


  • The Haryana government will provide Rs 21,000 to all those families whose third girl child was born under the 'Aapki Beti, Hamari Beti' scheme (after August 24, 2015).
  • They will receive the amount irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, income and number of sons.
  • The scheme is aimed to combat the problem of declining child sex ratio and promote girls’ education in the state.
  • Earlier, the first girl child born in the families belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and all Below Poverty Line (BPL), and second, twin or multiple girls born on in any family were eligible (after January 22, 2015).


Jhargram becomes 22nd Bengal district


  • The Chief Minister of West Bengal 'Mamata Banerjee' has declared 'Jhargram' as the 22nd district of the state.
  • Jhargram has been formed by bifurcating West Midnapore district.
  • 200 Crore budget has been also sanctioned for the development of the Jhargram district.
  • Multi-specialty hospitals, as well as schools and colleges, will be built in all blocks of the new district.


UP to set up 6 AIIMS like institutes, 25 medical colleges in next five years


  • The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh ‘Yogi Adityanath’ has announced setting up 6 AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) like institutes and 25 new medical colleges in the state in the next five years.
  • The state government will provide all possible help to the university and upgrade it to an AIIMS like institution.


Aditya Birla Group gets RBI license to start payments bank


  • Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank Ltd has become the seventh entity to receive a final license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to set up a payments bank.
  • The group's outfit Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank is a 51:49 joint venture (JV) between Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd (ABNL) and telecom major Idea Cellular.
  • Earlier, RBI granted a final license to Fino Pay Tech Ltd and National Securities Depository Ltd.
  • Airtel is offering 7.25% interest on its savings account.
  • IPPB is offering three types of accounts where interest rates will vary from 4.5-5.5%.

Note: Payments banks can accept deposits from individuals and small businesses up to a maximum of Rs. 1 lakh per account.

Japan officially recognizes Bitcoin as currency


  • Japan has officially recognized Bitcoin and digital currencies as legal money with effect from 1st April, 2017.
  • The recognition comes after implementation of a new law amending Banking Act in Japan for legalizing these currencies.
  • This will help in integration of digital currency into legal banking system through regulatory scrutiny.

Note:
  • Bitcoin is a form of digital currency or virtual currency created and held electronically.
  • It was invented by a group of programmers, under the name of Satoshi Nakamoto.

'Virat Kohli' named Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World for 2016


  • Indian captain ‘Virat Kohli’ (28-year) has been named Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World for 2016.
  • Kohli amassed last year, 1,215 Test runs at an average of 75.93, 10 ODI (739 runs at an average 92.37,) T20 International (641 runs at an average 106.83).
  • He had the highest average in all three formats last year.
  • Kohli becomes the third Indian to be bestowed with the honor, with Virender Sehwag (2008 and 2009) and Sachin Tendulkar (2010).

Note: The Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World was established in 2004 to select the best cricketer based upon their performances anywhere in the world in the previous calendar year.
