Sandeep Jajodia appointed ‘Assocham’ president

  • Sandeep Jajodia has been elected President of the industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).
  • He succeeded Sunil Kanoria co-founder and Vice Chairman of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited.
  • Currently, Jajodia is the chairman and managing director of Monnet Ispat and Energy.
  • Sandeep Jajodia born in Kolkata and went to St. Columba's School, Delhi.
  • Jajodia completed B.com (Hons) degree from Delhi University in 1988.
  • He married to Seema daughter of Om Prakash Jindal and sister of Naveen Jindal.

Pakistan appoints Tehmina Janjua as Foreign Secretary

  • Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN (United Nations) Tehmina Janjua has been appointed as the country's first woman Foreign Secretary.
  • She will replace incumbent Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry.
  • Chaudhry will be taking charge as Pakistan's new ambassador to the US.
  • Janjua holds Master's degrees from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad and Columbia University (New York).

US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn resigns over his contacts with Russia

  • The National Security Adviser of United states Michael Flynn has resigned over his contacts with Russia.
  • Earlier, Mr. Flynn is alleged to have discussed US sanctions with the Russian Ambassador before President Donald Trump took office.
  • Retired Lieutenant General Joseph Keith Kellogg has been appointed the acting National Security Advisor.

  • NSC serves as the chief in-house advisor to the President of the United States on national security issues.
  • National Security Advisor is a senior aide in the Executive Office of the US President, based at the West Wing of the White House.

NHRC being organized two-day seminar on Bonded Labour from today

  • Today, the Chairperson of NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) Justice H L Dattu has inaugurated a two-day seminar on Bonded Labour at Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, Teen Murti Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The seminar will cover various aspects related to the prevalence of bonded labor and challenges in its elimination, relief and rehabilitation of the rescued bonded laborers.
  • The Commission has been receiving the spate of complaints from time to time regarding exploitation and harassment of persons who have been victims of bonded labour system.
  • Some of these complaints are related to non-payment of wages or payment of wages lower than notified minimum wages and long working hours and indecent behaviour with women folk.
Note: The NHRC is the National Human Rights Commission of India, responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights, defined by the Act as "rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution or embodied in the International Covenants".

India’s first floating elementary school inaugurated on Manipur’s Loktak Lake


  • The first floating elementary school of India named ‘Loktak Elementary Floating School’ has been inaugurated at Langolsabi Leikai of Champu Khangpok floating village on Loktak Lake in Manipur.
  • The school has set up with an aim to provide education to drop outs students as well as illiterate adults.
  • Currently, It is providing education around 40 students from Class I-III.
  • It was built under the initiative undertaken by All Loktak Lake Fisherman’s Union with the support of an NGO People Resources Development Association (PRDA).
  • Loktak lake (lifeline of Manipur) is the largest freshwater lake in northeast India.

Aero India 2017 begins in Bengaluru

  • Today, the five-day 11th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition “Aero India 2017” will be held at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru (Karnataka).
  • The event is being organized and conducted by the Defence Exhibition Organisation (DEO), Ministry of Defence.
  • Nearly 270 Indian and 279 foreign companies will take part in the expo.
  • A total of 51 countries are participating in the event with 72 aircraft.
  • Aerobatic teams participating in the show will be the Sarang Team (Indian Air Force), the Surya Kiran Team (Indian Air Force), the Scandinavian Air Show Team (Sweden) and the Evolvkos Aerobatic Team (Britain).
NoteIt is the second largest air show in the world after the Paris Air Show.

Retail inflation slips to 3.17 percent in January

  • Due to declining prices of food items Retail inflation fell to 3.17% in January 2017, lowest level of retail inflation in at least over three years.
  • Retail inflation, measured in terms of the Consumer Price Index(CPI), had stood at 3.41% in Dec 2016 and 5.69 % in Jan 2017.
  • Retail prices of vegetables dropped 15.62% last month, while that of pulses fell 6.62%.
  • According to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Overall retail inflation in food dropped to 0.53% in January, from 1.37% in December.
Note: Inflation rates in India are usually quoted as changes in the wholesale price index (WPI), for all commodities.

I-T dept issues refunds of Rs 1.42 cr this fiscal; 41.5% higher than last year

  • The income tax department (I-T dept.) has issued 41.5 % higher than last year and refund 1.42 lakh crore rupees so far in this fiscal.
  • The centralized processing center of the tax department has already processed over 4.19 crore income tax returns and issued over 1.62 crore refunds during the current financial year.
  • 92% of the refunds issued are below 50 thousand rupees and only 2% of refunds less than 50 thousand rupees remain to be issued.

Hindustan Motors sells Ambassador Car brand to Peugeot

  • The Hindustan Motors has signed an agreement with French automaker Peugeot for sale of the Ambassador brand including the trademarks for a consideration of Rs. 80 crore.
  • Earlier, Hindustan Ambassador car Owned by the CK Birla Group, manufactured at Uttarpara on the outskirts of Kolkata discontinue the production due to falling sales and mounting debt in 2014.
  • It was the first diesel car of India and was the longest-produced auto brand that was manufactured between 1958 to 2014.
  • Peugeot Citroen had formed a Joint Venture with CK Birla Group for the Chennai plant in January 2017 and re-enter India by 2018.

India & UK signed bilateral MoU to allow more flights to boost tourism and trade

  • India and the United Kingdom (UK) have signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to allow more flights to boost tourism and trade in both the countries.
  • The agreement has been signed by the Union Minister of Civil Aviation Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and UK representative Lord Ahmad in New Delhi.
  • The MoU seeks to ease restrictions on the number of scheduled flights between India and the UK.
  • This measure will allow a greater range of flights for passengers while providing a boost trade and tourism for both the countries.

Maiden ITTF World Tour event in India to begin in New Delhi

  • Today, the first ever ITTF World Tour event in India has begun at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi.
  • Overall, 80 players (52 in the men's section and 28 in the women's section) have confirmed their participation.
  • The qualification rounds will be held on 14 to 15 February.
  • when as many as 29 Indians will vie to make the main draw beginning 16th
  • The 1.5 lakh US dollar India Open also happens to be the biggest ever ITTF event in terms of prize money.
