Mines and Minerals Bill Passed By Parliament
Parliament has passed Mines and Minerals (Development and
Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016. The amendment Bill was first passed in the
Lok Sabha on 3 March 2016 and later in the Rajya Sabha on 2 May 2016. The Bill
amends the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. It also
replaces the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment
Ordinance, 2015 promulgated on 12 January 2015. Now, the bill will be sent to
the President for his assent.
Railways Signed Agreement with Haryana, Punjab
For Planting Trees Along Track
Indian Railways on 2 May signed an agreement with the Forest
Department of Haryana and Punjab for planting of trees along the Railway track
on its land boundary. The MoU was signed by Pankaj Saxena, Chief Engineer/
P&D, Northern Railway on behalf of Railways whereas it was by Dr Amrinder
Kaur, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) from forest departments. It
paves way for planting 5 lakh trees during this season.
India’s Kalvari Stealth Submarine Starts Sea
Trials
INS Kalvari’ (Tiger Shark),, Indian Navy’s first indigenous
Scorpene-class stealth submarine, has recently launched for the first sea trial
in the Mumbai naval dockyard. It is a diesel-electric attack submarine which is
built under the strategic Project 75 by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in
collaboration with French naval defence and energy company DCNS.
Indian-American Sikh Woman Elected To Key
Republican Post
An Indian American Sikh woman from California, Harmeet Kaur
Dhillon has been elected to an important position in the Republican party at
the US national level. She was elected as the newest national committee woman,
a key position of the Republican National Committee. Prior to this, she
was vice chairman of the California GOP. She was the first woman elected to
this position of vice chair of the California Republican Party. She was born in
Chandigarh, India but was raised in rural North Carolina after her Sikh parents
had migrated to US.
