Biplab Kumar Deb sworn in as Tripura Chief Minister

  • BJP leader Biplab Kumar Deb (48-years) sworn in as the Tripura’s Chief Minister (10th).
  • Tripura’s Governor Tathagata Roy administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Deb and his council of ministers in a ceremony at Assam Rifles ground in Agartala.
  • Jishnu Deb Burman, a member of the royal family, took oath as the Deputy CM of the State.
  • The BJP alliance in the north-eastern state has won 43 out of the 60 assembly seats, ending nearly 25 years of the Left rule in Tripura.
Note:
  • Biplab Deb was born in Rajdhar Nagar village in Gomati district of Tripura.
  • He completed his graduation from Udaipur College before shifting to New Delhi for his higher Studies and Masters.

Vivek R Wadekar appointed new special Director in ED

  • Mr. Vivek R Wadekar (IRS officer-1991-batch) has been appointed as the new Special Director in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by the government.
  • His appointment will be for five years from the date he takes the charge at the agency.
  • The ED is the central investigative agency (under the finance ministry) that enforces the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) in the country.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant launches Women Entrepreneurship Platform

  • NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has launched the Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP).
  • The WEP will provide opportunities to women to realize their entrepreneurial aspirations, scale-up innovative initiatives and chalk-out sustainable, long-term strategies for their businesses.
  • The platform aspires to substantially increase the number of women entrepreneurs who will create and empower a dynamic New India.
  • It aims to promote women entrepreneurship and provide industry linkages and partner support to women entrepreneurs.

Udyam Sakhi Portal launched for Women Entrepreneurs

  • The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has launched a portal “www.udyamsakhi.org.” for women entrepreneurs of India.
  • The portal is a network for nurturing entrepreneurship and creating business models for low-cost products and services in order to empower women and make them self-reliant and self-sufficient.

Asmita scheme to provide sanitary napkins at subsidized rates: Fadnavis

  • According to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state government's Asmita scheme to provide sanitary napkins at subsidized rates to rural girls and women.
  • Sanitary napkins will be sold at 62 paise to rural women under the scheme by Women Self-Help Groups.
  • Under the scheme, a packet of eight sanitary pads will be made available for girl students of Zilla Parishad schools for 5 rupees.

SC allows 'living will' made by terminally-ill patients for passive euthanasia

  • The Supreme Court’s five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra has allowed the 'living will' made by terminally-ill patients for passive euthanasia.
  • The 'living will' is a concept where a man or woman decides in many advances whether he or she wants to be kept on life support or vegetative condition, in case of a terminal illness.
  • Directions and guidelines laid down by it and its directive shall remain in force till a legislation is brought on the issue.
  • Earlier a PIL had to the Apex Court that since a patient under coma or vegetative conditions could not express his/her wish, so he should be given the right to die.

French President Emmanuel Macron arriving in India today on the four-day visit

  • Today, the French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in New Delhi on a four-day visit to India.
  • The objective of the visit to strengthening the bilateral economic, political and strategic dimension of engagement between the two countries.
  • During the visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron will co-chair the Founding Conference of the International Solar Alliance.
  • France is the 9th largest foreign investor in India
  • The bilateral trade between India and France from April 2016 to March 2017 reached 10.95 billion dollars.

US & Israeli military launch month-long joint military drill

  • The United States and Israeli military have launched a month-long joint military drill “Juniper Cobra 2018" that simulates a missile attack on Israel. 
  • Around 2,500 US troops routinely based in Europe have been deployed in Israel and 2,000 Israeli Aerial Defence troops, logistics units, medical forces and other Israel Defence Forces units are participating. 
  • The exercise simulates a scenario in which Israel is being attacked on several fronts, including by precision-guided ballistic missiles from Iran.

Direct tax collections register growth of 19.5% till Feb current fiscal

  • The Direct tax collections have registered a growth of 19.5% (7.44 lakh crore rupees) till February of the current fiscal as compared to corresponding period of last year.
  • The net Direct Tax collections represent 74.3% (10.05 lakh crore rupees) of the revised estimates of Direct Taxes for the financial year 2017-18 which is.
  • The gross collections before adjusting for refunds have increased by 14.5% (8.83 lakh crore rupees) during April 2017 to February 2018.
  • Refunds amounting to 1.39 lakh crore rupees have been issued during April, 2017 to last month.
  • According to Finance Ministry, the growth rate of net collections for corporate income tax is 19.7% and for Personal Income Tax is 18.6%.

Anjum Moudgil wins Silver at ISSF World Cup 2018

  • Indian shooter Anjum Moudgil clinched a silver medal in the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico.
  • Former junior world champion Ruijiao Pei (China) has won the Gold Medal.
  • India thus remained on top of the medals tally with eight medals.
