þ BANKING & ECONOMY
  • The SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) and India's ratings agency, Crisil have launched India’s first MSE Sentiment Index, CriSidEx (CRISIL-SIDBI MSE Sentiment Index) for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has received Rs 173.06 crore capital infusions from the Govt in the current fiscal.
  • The Central Statistics Office (CSO) revised the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate for 2015-16 to 8.2% from the earlier estimates of 8% and kept the 2016-17 growth unchanged at 7.1%.
  • Rating agency Crisil revised upwards outlook on 18 state-run banks to ‘stable’ from ‘negative’ and also reaffirmed their ratings following the Rs 88,139-crore capital infusion by govt.
  • Private sector Axis Bank launched the fourth edition of ‘Evolve’, an annual multi-city knowledge series for Bank’s SME customers.
  • The Pink-color Economic Survey of India (ESI) 2017-18 was tabled in Parliament by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Jan 29 marking the first business of this year’s budget session, which estimated Indian economy growth by 7-7.5% in 2018-19.
  • MD and CEO of Allahabad Bank, Usha Ananthasubramanian has been elected as the first woman chairman of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) for the year 2017-18.

  • The Union Govt has announced Rs. 1.4 lakh-crore Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahaabhiyan (KUSUM) scheme for promoting solar farming by decentralizing solar power production of up to 28,250 MW to help farmers.
  • The Department of Defence Production (DDP) under the Ministry of Defence has constituted a 17 member multi-stakeholder task force headed by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to study use and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in military.
  • The Indian Railways has decided to set up a massive rail coach factory in Latur district i.e. in Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
  • India, the world’s largest democracy, ranked 42nd among 165 independent states on annual 2017 Global Democracy Index (GDI) released by UK-based company, Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first edition Khelo India School Games (KISG) open at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has launched third version of the Govt e-Marketplace (GeM 3.0).
  • Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) has inaugurated high performance computer system (HPC) or supercomputer Mihir (meaning sun) at National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida.
  • According to the report published by World Steel Association (WSA), India has overtaken US to become the world’s third largest steel producer in 2017.
  • According to a report by New World Wealth, India ranked sixth in the list of wealthiest countries with total wealth of USD 8,230 billion, while the United States topped the chart.
  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Jai Ram Thakur launched the ‘Shakti’ app to ensure safety and protection of women in the state.
  • Aadhaar has been named as the Hindi word of the year for 2017 by Oxford Dictionary.
  • Google has introduced a new app named "Bulletin" that allows anybody to submit stories for and about their communities.
  • The Union Home Ministry is planning to set up Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), an apex coordination centre in New Delhi to deal with cybercrimes such as financial frauds, circulation of communal and pornographic contents.
  • The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has issued notification to provide quota to people with autism, mental illnesses, intellectual disabillity and victims of acid attacks in Central govt jobs.

  • The Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) has been inaugurated in Neknampur Lake in Hyderabad on World Wetlands Day (Feb 02) to clean and purify the polluted waterbody.
  • The 2nd edition of the Nobel Prize Series India 2018 has been inaugurated in Panaji, Goa with the theme “Science Impacts Lives”.
  • The 7th edition of India Energy Congress (IEC) 2018, organised by World Energy Council (WEC) India, has been started in New Delhi with the theme “Energy 4.0: Energy Transition Towards 2030”.
  • Department of Agriculture of Punjab Govt has issued directions to discontinue the sale of 20 pesticides (insecticides) including Endosulfan as this is harmful to health of humans and environment with immediate effect.
  • The  Maharashtra  Govt under  the  chairmanship  of  Chief  Minister  Devendra  Fadnavis  has  approved

  • Rwanda becomes the first low-income country to provide universal eye care for its 12 million populations.
  • The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in United Arab Emirates (UAE) achieved a Guinness World Records title earlier with its latest adventure tourism product – Jebel Jais Flight: The World’s Longest Zipline, measuring 2.83 kms in length.
  • Thar Link Express, second solitary rail service between India and Pakistan has received the extension for three more years i.e. till 2021.
  • The World Economic Forum (WEF) announced a new Global Centre for Cybersecurity in a bid to safeguard the world from hackers and growing data breaches — especially from nation-states.

  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a project agreement and inked US $375 million loan agreement with World Bank for Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP).
  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer inked MoU to establish a ‘Centre to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance’ in New Delhi.
  • India has joined Ashgabat Agreement on the establishment of an International Transport and Transit Corridor between the Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
  • Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Joint Stock Company United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), Russia have signed an MoU to collaborate and engage in Design, Development and Execution of contemporary, State-of-Art vessels for Inland and Coastal Waterways.
  • The Union Govt has inked $100 mn Loan Agreement with World Bank for Project to Boost Rural Economy of Tamil Nadu.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Govt of India signed a 250 million dollar loan to finance the construction of 6,254 kilometres all-weather rural roads in the States of Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal under the Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Program (PMGSY).
