PM Modi Launches First Khelo India School Games in New Delhi

  • Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the first Khelo India school Games at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The games will be held in 16 disciplines include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Shooting, Swimming, Weightlifting and Wrestling at five venues.
  • Gold medals (199), silver medals (199) and bronze medals (275) are at stake in these Games.
  • The country’s brightest talent in the under-17 age group will compete in the Games.
Note:
  • Khelo India will help scout young talent from the school in various disciplines and groom them as future sports champions.
  • Talented players identified in priority sports disciplines at various levels by a High-Powered Committee will be provided annual financial assistance of five lakh per annum for eight years.
  • The Government will also develop sports infrastructure in one school each in 150 districts.

Indian Navy launches 3rd Scorpene class submarine Karanj

  • Today, Indian Navy has launched the third Scorpene class submarine Karanj, constructed by shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
  • Now, the submarine will undergo rigorous tests for the next one year before it is commissioned
  • Total six submarines are being built at the MDL in collaboration with French shipbuilding major Naval Group. 
  • The submarines have the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision-guided weapons.
Note:
  • On 14th December 2017, INS Kalvari (first), diesel-electric attack submarine was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • On 12th January 2018, INS Khandari (second), was launched, currently undergoing sea trials.

Indian & Vietnamese armies hold first military exercise in Jabalpur

  • The first military exercise, India-Vietnam Bilateral Army Exercise (VINBAX-2018) has been conducted at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The six-day-long exercise was conducted as part of joint training undertaken with friendly foreign countries by Indian Army.
  • It was jointly undertaken between 15 officers each from Indian Army and Vietnam People’s Army.
Note: A military exercise is the employment of military resources in training for military operations, either exploring the effects of warfare or testing strategies without actual combat.

AAI allocates Rs. 3400 crores for airports in North East region

  • According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman Guruprasad Mahapatra, AAI has allocated nearly Rs. 3400 crores for the up gradation of airports in the North East region.
  • An amount of Rs 1720 crore for Assam, Tripura (Rs 525 crore), Manipur (Rs 800 crore), Nagaland (Rs 42 crore), Arunachal Pradesh (Rs 211 crore) and Mizoram (Rs 60 crore) has been allocated.
  • Airports in the NE region recorded a total passenger movement of 68.04 lakh in 2016-17 and registered a growth of 27.02% over the previous year.

Harshvardhan launches PetaFlop supercomputer

  • The Union Environment Minister Harshvardhan has launched a 2.8 PetaFlops capacity high-performance computer system 'Mihir' in Noida.
  • The system will be able to predict weather and climate accurately.
  • The system will help the MeT department in predicting severe climate-related calamities and warnings for fishermen.
  • Now, India has joined the elite 30 members group of countries which have this advanced technology.

Guru Ravidas Jayanti being celebrated across the country today

  • Today, the birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas (the founder of Bhakti movement) is being celebrated across the country.
  • As per Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on full moon day of the Magh month (Magh Purnima).
Note:
  • Ravidas was born in the village of Seer Goverdhanpur, near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Guru Ravidas was a North Indian mystic poet-Sant of the bhakti movement during the 15th to 16th century CE.

Obituaries

BJP MP Chintaman Wanaga passes away

  • Senior BJP MP from Maharashtra Chintaman Wanaga (67-year) passed away after suffering a massive heart attack in New Delhi.
  • He was elected to the Lok Sabha thrice and once as the member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
  • Wanaga was elected to the Lok Sabha from Palghar in Maharashtra.

India ranks sixth in the list of wealthiest countries

  • According to a report by New World Wealth, India has been ranked sixth in the list of wealthiest countries with the total wealth of 8,230 billion US dollars.
  • The United States is the wealthiest country in the world as the total wealth held in 2017 amounted to 64,584 billion dollars.
  • China at the second place with 24,803 billion dollars and Japan with 19,522 billion dollars at third.
  • India was the best-performing wealth market globally in 2017 as its total wealth swelled from 6,584 billion dollars in 2016 to 8,230 billion dollars in 2017 (25% growth).
  • Total wealth refers to the private wealth held by all the individuals living in each country, includes all their assets (excludes government funds).

B.N. Mullik Memorial All India Police Football Ch'ship to be held in Jammu

  • B.N. Mullik Memorial All India Police Football Championship will be held in Jammu from the 11th of February this year.
  • The football championship being conducted under the aegis of All India Sports Council Board would be played on league-cum-knockout basis.
  • 37 teams with 900 players are participating in the championship which includes 84 matches.

Sharath Kamal lifts National Men's singles title for the eighth time

  • India table tennis player ‘Sharath Kamal’ (Tamil Nadu) has lifted the National men's singles title (8th time) in Ranchi, equalling the feat of Kamlesh Mehta.
  • He defeated top-seed Anthony Amalraj 4-1 and received two lakh rupees as prize money.
  • Suthirta Mukherjee (West Bengal) emerged the new women’s champion, beating Manika Batra 4-3.
  • Her maiden effort fetched Rs. 1.5 lakh, while Manika received 50% less in prize money.
