Asha Bhosle to get Yash Chopra Memorial Award

  • Indian singer Asha Bhosle (84-year) will be given the 'Yash Chopra Memorial Award' for her outstanding contribution to the Hindi film industry.
  • The award will be presented to Asha Bhosle on 16th February.
  • The name of Asha Bhosle is in the Guinness World Records for recording over 11,000 songs in 20 different languages.
  • Earlier, recipients of the Yash Chopra Memorial Award are Lata Mangeshkar (playback singer), Amitabh Bachchan (actor), Rekha (actress), and Shah Rukh Khan (actor).
Note:
  • Yash Chopra memorial award has been instituted by the TSR Foundation of T. Subbarami Reddy in memory of producer-director Yash Chopra (died in 2012).

Parl Group to confer Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards to five MPs

  • The Parliamentary Group has decided to confer Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards to five Members of Parliament.
  • Dr. Najma Heptulla (Former Rajya Sabha MP) has been selected for this award for the year 2013 while the other awardees include Hukumdev Narayan Yadav (Lok Sabha MP) for 2014 and Ghulam Nabi Azad (Rajya Sabha MP) for 2015.
  • Dinesh Trivedi (Lok Sabha MP) has been selected for 2016 while Bhartruhari Mahatab (Lok Sabha MP) has been chosen for Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2017.

Obituaries

Nation remembers Mahatma Gandhi on his 70th death anniversary

  • Today, the nation remembered the father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 70th death anniversary.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have payed tributes Bapu at Rajghat in New Delhi.
  • Gandhi was the pioneer of non-violence and practiced it throughout his life.
  • Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Gandhi on 30 January 1948 by firing three bullets into his chest.
Note:
  • Gandhi's journey in India began in 1917 by launching Satyagraha from Champaran, Bihar (the first non-violent) resistance to the British rule.
  • His struggles brought freedom to a country which had been under British rule for about 200 years.

CEC LAHDC of Leh region Sonam Dawa passes away

  • Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) of Leh Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo passed away following cardiac arrest.
  • In 2015, he was elected to the chief executive councilor.
  • Ladakh Buddhist Association has appealed to Business establishments to observe Ladakh Bandh today to mourn the sudden demise of chief executive councilor of local government.

Anti-Leprosy Day being observed today

  • The ‘Anti-Leprosy Day’ observed every year on the Martyrdom Day of Mahatma Gandhi to make people aware of the real need to fight the infectious disease.
  • A campaign Leprosy Awareness Campaign ‘Sparsh’ has been organized in all the Gram Sabhas throughout the country by the Central Leprosy Division of the Health Ministry.
  • The campaign carries the important information about the disease to help affected people.
  • It includes free of cost multidrug therapy that is available at all government dispensaries, health centers, and hospitals to provide complete treatment.

National Affairs

MCD launches new mobile application to improve civic services

  • Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has launched the three MCD’s mobile application App 311 to enhance engagement of citizens in the resolution of grievances and improvement of civic services in the city.
  • The Mobile App 311 has been integrated with the Swachhta App of the Ministry of Urban Affairs.
  • The app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and the Apple Store.

New Khadi dress for Postmen/MTS launched by Communications Minister Manoj Sinha

  • The union Communications Minister Manoj Sinha has launched a new khadi uniform for the Department of Posts personnel, including postmen and multi-tasking staff (MTS) in New Delhi.
  • The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) had designed this new uniform.
  • The new dress carries the logo of 'India Post' on the pocket and the cap, along with red stripes on shoulders and shoulder blade.
  • The ministry started the process around 25 days back and decided to come up with this khadi uniform in khaki colour.

India's crude steel production rises 6.2% to 101.4 MT in 2017

  • India has become the world's third-largest steel producer and the country is now looking to bag the second spot from Japan.
  • Country's crude steel production grew by 6.2% to 101.4 million tonnes (MT) in 2017 compared to 95.5 MT in the previous year.
  • China remained the world leader by producing 831.7 MT in 2017, up 5.7% from 786.9 MT in the year-ago period.
  • Global steel production reached 1,691.2 MT for the year 2017, up by 5.3% compared to 2016 when the output was 1,606.3 MT.

Postage stamp released in honor of footballer T Ao

  • Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi has released a postage stamp on former India football captain Dr. Talimeren Ao on his birth centenary year.
  • Ao had captained the Indian team in 1948 London Olympics and played for Mohun Bagan for several years in the 1940s.
Note:
  • Dr. Talimeren Ao was born on 28th January 1918 in the then Naga Hills region of Assam and died in 1998.

India to host informal WTO Ministerial gathering in March

  • India has announced that it will host an informal WTO Ministerial gathering on 19-20th March in New Delhi.
  • Earlier, Trade ministers from various countries (like Australia, Japan, and Switzerland) met for an informal WTO ministerial gathering in Davos to discuss the way forward for the global trade organization.
  • WTO is facing significant challenges and fundamental reflections are required at the political level on key issues of divergence.

ICC U-19 World Cup: India beat Pakistan by 203 runs

  • India beat Pakistan by 203 runs to enter final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup cricket at Christchurch, New Zealand
  • In the 2nd semi-final, India posted 272 for 9 and skittled out Pakistan for just 69 in 29.3 overs to enter the Final for the sixth time.
  • Shubman Gill (102* run) was adjudged man of the match.
  • Earlier, in 1st Semi-final, Australia had defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets in the other semi-final.
  • Now India will face Australia in the summit clash at Mount Maunganui on 3rd February.
Note:
  • The ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup is an international cricket tournament organized by the ICC contested by national under-19 teams.
  • Australia and India have won the World Cup three times, while Pakistan(2-times) and England, South Africa & the West Indies once each.
