Sterling K Brown has become the first African-American to win Golden Globe 2018

  • Actor Sterling K Brown has become the first African-American to win Golden Globe for best actor in a drama television series.
  • He bagged the accolades for his role as Randall Pearson on NBC's breakout hit "This Is Us".
  • Elizabeth Moss took home the Golden Globe trophy in Best Drama Actress TV category for her performance in "The Handmaids Tale".
  • Actor Nicole Kidman won the award for the Best Actress in a Limited Series at the event for her work on "Big Little Lies" and took the opportunity to speak out against abuse.
Note:  The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards are honored the best in film and American television of 2017 being held at Beverly Hills in California.

National Affairs

Online ticketing facility at Victoria Memorial

  • The union culture secretary ‘Raghvendra Singh’ has launched the e-ticketing facility for the iconic Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.
  • Two automated ticket vending machines were inaugurated on the occasion, which would be placed at the South and North gates of the famous landmark of the city.
  • Ticket to the garden that costs ten rupees over the counter will be priced around Rs. 11 when booking online.
  • Foreigners will have to pay two hundred rupees for the online ticket.
Note:
  • The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India (built between 1906 and 1921).
  • It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819–1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

Akshay Kumar roped in by BMC for Swachh Survekshan 2018

  • As part of the Swachh Survekshan 2018, Bollywood actor ‘Akshay Kumar’ has been roped in by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to promote cleanliness in Mumbai
  • This year, the Swachh Survekshan started from 4th January and will run till 10th March this year by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs ranking urban and rural areas of the country.

Growth likely to be higher than CSO estimate of 2.1%: Agriculture ministry

  • According to the Agriculture Ministry, the country's agriculture sector is expected to grow higher than projected 2.1% growth (4.9% in the preceding year) by the Central Statistical Office for the current fiscal.
  • The Advance Estimate is based on the data on crop coverage and estimated production shared by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES).
  • The DES has shared data on area coverage and production, based on their compilation by the month of August 2017.
  • The area coverage under different crops in Kharif as of August 2017 was below that of the previous year on account of delay in onset of monsoons in some parts of the country.

Health Ministry launches first Online Oncology Tutorial Series

  • The Union Health Ministry has launched the nation's first digital Online Oncology Tutorial Series to train doctors across the country in early detection, prevention, palliation, rehabilitation and treatment of various cancers.
  • The digital Online Oncology Tutorial Series has been designed by the Tata Memorial Centre in collaboration with the Union Health Ministry.
  • The overall course is designed for seven weeks with different modules based on various sites and sub-sites of Cancer.
  • It comprises of 14 hours of comprehensive e-learning through more than 40 video lectures, case studies, assessment questionnaires and periodic interactive Webinar sessions with respective consultants of Tata Memorial Hospital.

Mamata Banerjee Unveils Official Emblem of West Bengal Government

  • The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unveiled the official emblem of the state govt, which was recently approved by the centre.
  • The emblem designed by Ms. Banerjee highlights the Ashoka emblem on the top with the theme of "Biswa Bangla" at the centre.
  • This new logo will be used in all government documents, including government letterheads.

Obituaries

World champion powerlifter Saksham Yadav dies in road accident

  • Powerlifting world champion Saksham Yadav lost his life after succumbing to injuries received in a road accident at Sindhu border in Delhi.
  • Saksham won a gold medal for India at powerlifting world championship held in Moscow in December 2017.
  • In 2016, Saksham had also won a gold medal in the junior category.

Former WTO DG Sutherland passes away

  • Former World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Peter Sutherland (71-year) passed away in Dublin, Ireland.
  • Sutherland became the WTO's first chief in 1995, having previously been head of its precursor, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
  • He was born in Dublin in 1946 and served as Ireland's youngest Attorney General, then youngest European Union commissioner during the 1980s.

Former Bollywood actor Shrivallabh Vyas passes away

  • Bollywood actor Shrivallabh Vyas (60-year) of passed away in Jaipur.
  • The actor had appeared in over 60 Hindi films, with occasional stints in regional cinema, television, and theatre.
  • He has done films like 'Sarfarosh', 'Lagaan', 'Abhay', 'Aan: Men at Work', 'Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero' and 'Sankat City'.

NASA's astronaut John Young passes away

  • Legendary astronaut John Young (87-year) passed away at home in Houston, Washington.
  • Young was the only agency astronaut to go into space as part of the NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programs, and the first to fly into space six times.
  • In 1972, he was the ninth man to walk on the Moon.
Note:
  • Young was born 24th Sept, 1930 and grew up in Orlando, Florida.
  • Young received more than 100 major accolades in his lifetime, including the prestigious Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1981.

Sports

Sports Minister Rathore launches 'Khelo India' logo

  • The Union Minister of state (I/C) youth affairs and sports ‘Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore’ has launched 'Khelo India' logo at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The three-stroke Khelo India logo, designed by Ogilvy India and offers flexibility in adapting to numerous pictorial forms.
  • The color of the Indian flag evokes a sense of National pride and team-work.
Note: The Khelo India School Games will be staged from 31st January this year and organized in collaboration with SGFI (School Games Federation of India) and the National sports federations.

Gilles Simon wins inaugural Tata Open title

  • The unseeded French player Gilles Simon (89th - ranked) has lifted the inaugural Tata Open Maharashtra Tennis trophy at Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune.
  • He defeated Kevin Anderson (14th-ranked) in straight sets 7-6, 6-2.
  • It is the first title for Simon, since his win at Marseille in February 2015.
  • This time, the event moved to the tier two city Pune and was rechristened Tata Open Maharashtra.
