Goa to Host 3rd Edition of Science Film Festival of India “SCI-FFI”

  • Goa will host the third edition of the Science Film Festival of India “SCI-FFI” from 16th January 2018 (end 20th January).
  • School students have been invited to submit films shot on a mobile phone on any topic of science to win prizes
  • The film competition is open in two categories: films duration more than 5 minutes and films duration up to 5 minutes.
  • The objective the festival to boost the culture of science films, all the films submitted should be related to science and technology.
Note: Vidnyan Parishad Goa (a unit of VIBHA-India) is the organizer of this annual event with the support of Department of Science and Technology, Govt of Goa and Entertainment Society of Goa and Goa College of Art.

Haryana government gives power subsidy to micro, small industries

  • The Haryana govt has announced, power tariff subsidy of Rs. 2 per unit for micro and small enterprises, under Enterprises Promotion Policy - 2015.
  • The relief will be given to the industries situated in C and D category blocks in terms of industrialization for three years from the date of release of power connection.
  • The aim of the policy is to facilitate state GDP growth rate in excess of 8% and generate employment for more than four lakh people and make Haryana a major investment destination.

Maharashtra govt to form education board for non-English medium schools

  • According to the Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde, the state govt has decided to form an international education board to prepare the syllabus for non-English medium schools.
  • In the first phase, 100 selected Marathi schools will function according to the new syllabus.

Carnatic vocalist Radha Vishwanathan passes away

  • Carnatic singer, Radha Viswanathan (83-years) passed away in Bengaluru.
  • Radha Viswanathan is the daughter of famous classical singer M S Subbulakshmi.
  • She had performed in concerts along with her mother M S Subbulakshmi.
  • In 1934, She was born at Gopichettypalayam in Tamil Nadu.

NCP leader Vasant Davkhare passes away

  • Senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Vasant Davkhare (67-year) passed away in Mumbai after a prolonged illness.
  • He was former deputy chairman of the Maharashtra Legislature Council.
  • In 1987, he was elected mayor of the Thane Municipal Corporation.

Hardeep Singh Puri launches design workshop on Global Housing Construction Technology Challenge

  • The Housing and Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has launched a two-day design workshop on Global Housing Construction Technology Challenge in New Delhi.
  • Around 600 million people of the country are expected to be living in cities by 2030 and a huge task will be to provide them with affordable housing system.
  • Material technology, Smart cities Programme, innovation with resource management and scientific management of waste will be the key factor in this regard.

Defence Ministry clears arms procurement contracts worth 2,420 crore rupees for Navy and Army

  • The Union Defence Ministry has cleared contracts worth Rs. 2,420 crores for Navy and Army which includes the procurement of P-8I Training Solution and Low-Intensity Conflict Electronic Warfare System (LICEWS).
  • The P-8I Training Solution will be bought from Boeing for around one thousand 950 crore rupees.
  • The P-8I aircraft is equipped for long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of broad area, maritime and littoral operations.
  • This system will equip Indian Army with upgraded communications infrastructure to effectively deal with advanced communications systems being used by terrorist groups.

Three Union ministries join hands to propel Technology Mission for Railways

  • Three Ministries (Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and Ministry of Science & Technology) have signed MoU (Memorandum of understanding) on Technology Mission for Indian Railways (TMIR).
  • The funding contribution in the Technology Mission is by the railway ministry (30 %), by the HRD ministry (25 %) and by the Department of Science and Technology (25 %).
  • This Technology Mission will conduct research and development projects in the fields of heavy haul, safety, energy, environment and urban railways.

NABARD sanctioned Rs 372.51 crore to Odisha

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs. 372.51 crore loan assistance under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) to Odisha for irrigation and rural bridge projects for the last quarter of this fiscal.
  • NABARD has also sanctioned 14 Rural Bridge Projects under Biju Setu Yojana with RIDF loan assistance of Rs 242.34 crore.
Note: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is an apex development financial institution in India, headquartered at Mumbai with branches all over India.

7.75% savings bonds to be available from 10th Jan

  • The union govt. has notified a new 7.75% taxable bond scheme for retail investors, will replace the previous 8% Scheme.
  • These bonds with seven-year maturity will open for subscription from the 10th of this month.
  • The interest will be payable half-yearly and the cumulative value of 1,000 rupees at maturity will be 1,703 rupees.
  • These bonds issued at par are meant for individual other than Non-Resident Indians and are not tradeable in the secondary market and are also not eligible as collateral for loans from banking institutions, non-banking financial companies or financial institutions.

China issues long-term visas to skilled people from abroad

  • China is issuing long-term visas to lure highly skilled people from abroad to work in the country.
  • The multi-entry visas will be valid for between five and 10 years.
  • Visa holders will be allowed to remain in the country for up to 180 days at a time and will be eligible to bring partners and children.
  • Applications for the visas can be made online, are free of charge and will be processed quickly.

Colin Munro first to smash 3 T20 international centuries

  • New Zealand's left-handed batsman Colin Munro has become the first batsman to score three hundred in T20 Internationals.
  • He achieved this mark by scoring 104 off 53 balls including 3 fours and 10 sixes in the final T20 match against West Indies at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.
  • New Zealand won over West Indies by 119 runs in the match.
