Answers with Explanation

1. (b) NAM

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the continuation of Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Ayush Mission (NAM) from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2020. The government has set aside funds worth Rs 2400 crore for the project over the 3 year period. NAM is being implemented by the Ministry of AYUSH with the objective of providing cost-effective AYUSH Services.

2. (c) Rajasthan

The Indian army's Southern Command conducted a major exercise called 'Hamesha Vijayee' in the deserts of Rajasthan to evaluate the capability of the armed forces to strike deep into enemy territory. The exercise was conducted in an integrated air-land battle scenario. 

3. (d) Oman

The Indian navy recently conducted bilateral military exercise ‘Naseem-Al-Bahr’ with Oman’s naval force. The exercise is the 11th edition and has been a biennial feature since 1993. The Indian ships, Trikand and Teg, entered Muscat on 16 December 17 for the harbour phase.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 December 2017 approved the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 that seeks to criminalise instant triple talaq among Muslims. According to the government, the bill is aimed at protecting the dignity and security of women in the Muslim community.

India’s ace shuttler, P V Sindhu had to settle for the silver medal at the BWF Dubai World Series Finals 2017 in Dubai, UAE on 17 December 2017, after she went down fighting against Japan’s top-seeded Akane Yamaguchi. Sindhu lost to Yamaguchi by 15-21, 21-12, 21-19 in a match that lasted for an hour and 34 minutes. 

8. (a) BJP

After an initial few hours of nail-biting suspense, the verdict for Gujarat is clear- the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has secured its sixth-straight term in the state. Out of the total 182 seats, the party won 99 seats, seven more than the mark of absolute majority, while the Congress won 77 seats. 

9. (c) Sushil Kumar

Indian freestyle wrestler, Sushil Kumar clinched the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, which were held in South Africa on 17 December 2017. The double Olympic medallist, who returned to international wrestling after more than three years, defeated New Zealand’s Akash Khullar with a pinfall in the final of the 74kg freestyle category to clinch the top medal. 

10. (d) Maruti Suzuki

The Skill Development Ministry on 18 December 2017 signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) with Maruti Suzuki to impart training to youth and enhance their employment potential.The MoU aims to provide high employment potential trades related to automobile and manufacturing industry to youth under the Skill India Mission.

According to UN World Migration Report (2018), India has largest diaspora in the world with more than 15.6 million people from India living overseas. Of the international migrants (people living outside the country of their birth) which was estimated at 243 million in 2015, the Indian diaspora constitutes nearly 6 per cent.

12. (a) Samsung

Samsung India entered into a partnership with UNESCO to launch virtual reality content and 360-degree videos on Indian heritage sites. The project will provide experiential educational content to students across the country.

13. (a) Justice Swatanter Kumar

The Chairperson of National Green Tribunal (NGT), Justice Swatanter Kumar announced his retirement from the post on 19 December 2017, after completing his five-year tenure. A full bench reference was organised at the NGT on the occasion.

14. (c) World Bank

India on 19 December 2017 signed a financing agreement worth US$ 125 million with the World Bank for ‘Skills Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement Operation (Strive) Project”. The main objective of the operation is to improve access to quality and market-driven vocational training and apprenticeships.

15. (c) Uttar Pradesh


In perhaps the first such move in any state, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the setting up of 'Cow Protection Committees' in each district in Uttar Pradesh, headed by the district magistrate and police chief. The panel also includes two private "cow-loving persons."
