Answers with Explanation 

1. (b) Australia 

Australia on 10 December 2017 defeated Rio Olympics champions Argentina 2-1 in the final of the Hockey World League Final to win the gold medal. Both the nations were tied at 1-1 after three-quarters of the match. Australia’s Blake Govers scored the winning goal with just three minutes left in the game. 

2. (c) Raffaele Bergamasco

Italian coach Raffaele Bergamasco has been appointed as the Performance Director for women's boxing. Bergamasco was the man behind India's best ever medal haul at the recently-concluded AIBA Women's Youth Boxing Championship. 

3. (c) Assam 

The state government of Assam has planned to build Kamakhya as the cleanest pilgrimage site in the country. Inaugurating the Kamakhya Development Project at the temple premises atop Nilachal hill in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said a clean environment will make a positive impression among devotees who come to Kamakhya every year in large numbers. 

4. (a) Uttarakhand 

The state government of Uttarakhand has taken a new initiative for energy conservation. The state government has made it compulsory for all Government offices to install LED bulbs. This will reduce the consumption of electricity in offices and civic areas. 

5. (d) Mt Hope

According to the new discovery, Mt Hope is the tallest mountain in the British Antarctic Territory (BAT). Its height is measured at 3,239 meters above sea level. Earlier, maps showed Mt Jackson with the height 3,184 meters as the tallest mountain in the territory according to researchers at British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

6. (b) Saudi Arabia

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced that a resolution was passed on 11 December 2017 that lifted the decades-old ban on providing licenses to commercial movie theatres. The decision will pave way for the opening of the country’s first public cinemas after more than 35 years.

7. (b) Alappuzha

Alappuzha, the coastal city of Kerala, which is famous for its backwaters and intricate network of canals and lagoons, was named in the United Nations (UN) report of five global cities that have successfully tackled solid waste management. Other cities in the list include Osaka in Japan, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Penang in Malaysia and Cajica in Colombia.

8. (a) Laqshya 

Union Health Minister JP Nadda launched new initiatives including Laqshya-A Labour Room Quality Improvement Initiative and safe delivery application at a function in New Delhi on the occasion of Universal Health Coverage Day.

9. (d) India

India will host the 2023 World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2021. The ICC World Cup 2019 will be held in England and Wales. This will be the first time that the event will be held entirely in India.

10. (c) Delhi 

Under a new scheme, the Delhi government has proposed to bear, at private hospitals, the cost of treatment of victims of motor accidents, fire incidents and acid attacks that take place on city's roads.  The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. 

11. (d) Rajasthan

The state government of Rajasthan has decided to recognise political prisoners held in jails during  the emergency period as ‘Loktantra Sainani’. The state’s cabinet decided to change the name of Rajasthan MISA and DIR Bandi Pension Rules 2008 to the Rajasthan Loktantra Sainani samman Nidhi 2008 on 12 December 2017. 

12. (a) INS Kalvari

INS Kalvari, the first of the Scorpene-class submarines, was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 December 2017. The indigenously-built war ship is the first of six such submarines that will be inducted into the Indian Navy. It represents a significant success for the Make in India initiative.

13. (d) Rohit Sharma

Indian batsman Rohit Sharma created history on 13 December 2017 by becoming the first batsman in the history of cricket to score three double centuries in one-day internationals (ODI). The ace batsman achieved the feat during India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka in Mohali, Punjab, in which India put up a mammoth score of 394/4 in 50 overs. 

14. (c) Priyanka Chopra

Indian actor, Priyanka Chopra has been bestowed with the 2017 Mother Teresa Memorial Award for her contribution towards lending her support to social causes such as her recent visit to Syria where she met and interacted with refugee children.

15. (d) Narinder Batra

The chief of International Hockey Federation, Narinder Batra was elected as the President of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) at its Annual General Meeting held in New Delhi on 14 December 2017.The 60-year-old Batra received 143 votes out of the total 160, winning the polls with an overwhelming majority. His opponesnt Anil Khanna on the other hand just managed to scramble 13 votes.
