India’s largest floating Solar Power Plant opened in Kerala

  • India’s largest floating Solar Power plant is inaugurated by the State power minister MM Mani in Kerala 
  • The plant is built at Banasura Sagar dam Kerala. The total budget for the project is Rs. 9.25 crore.
  • The solar power plant is built by the Thiruvananthapuram-based Ad Tech Systems.
  • The capacity of the plant is 260 watts, a 500-kilovolt-ampere (KVA) transformer and 17 inverters. It also consists of 1,938 solar panels.
  • The Banasura Sagar Dam is located in Wayanad District of Kerala in the Western Ghats. It is built over Kabini River.
  • It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia.
  • The Dam is named after the Banasura, the son of Mahabali who was a very respected king of Kerala.

Iran President opened the first phase of Chabahar port 

  • Iran President Hassan Rouhani has inaugurated the first phase of the Chabahar port project which is known as the Shahid Beheshti port.
  • Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan represented India at the inauguration ceremony.
  • With the inauguration of the port, it had opened a new strategic transit route between Iran, India and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
  • The Shahid Beheshti Port of Chabahar is now the only and largest port in Iran on the Indian Ocean and will significantly help in regional development with the rest of world countries.
  • A total of $ 1 billion has been spent on preparing and equipping the first phase of the Shahid Beheshti Chabahar Port.

Navy Day observed today

  • The Indian Navy day is observed every year on 4th December.
  • The navy day observed every year to celebrate achievements and role of the naval force in the country.
  • The Indian Navy is commanded by the President of India as Commander-in-Chief. It is the marine branch of the Indian Armed Forces.
  • Sunil Lamba is the current Chief of the Naval Staff.
 Note:
  • The Navy day is celebrated to honour the courageous attack on the Karachi harbour during the Indo-Pakistan war (on 4 December 1971) by the Indian Naval Missile boats as well as to reverence all the martyrs of that war.
  • The Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosle (Maratha Emperor) of the 17th century is considered as “Father of the Indian Navy”.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed on 3 December

  • Every year the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed on 3 December.
  • The theme of this year is - “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”.
  • In 1992, United Nations General Assembly declared the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons.
  • The objective of this day is to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development.

Ellie Goulding named UN Environment Global Goodwill Ambassador

  • British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has been chosen as a Global Goodwill Ambassador for UN Environment.
  • As an ambassador her role is to promote will work with the UN to further spread the message on key areas which includes climate change, wildlife protection and clean air & seas.
  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is founded by Maurice Strong in June 1972.
  • The main objective of the UNEP is to promote environmental activities and assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices.
  • Erik Solheim is the current head of the UNEP. The headquarter of UNEP is located in Nairobi, Kenya.

6. Salil S. Parekh appointed CEO & MD of Infosys

  • Salil S. Parekh is appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Infosys. The appointment will be effective from January 2018.
  • The board director of the company has approved the appointment. 
  • The interim CEO & MD U B Pravin Rao will step down on January 2, 2018, and will continue as the chief operating officer and a whole-time director of the company.

16th Meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council held in Russia

  • The 16th Meeting of the Heads of Government Council of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Sochi, Russia. The meeting was held from 30 November to 1 December 2017.
  • Sushma Swaraj, the Minister of External Affairs represented India in the summit.
  • The Meeting was chaired by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
  • In 2018, the next SCO Council of Heads of Government Meeting will be held in Tajikistan.

First International Conference on AYUSH & Wellness sector begins in New Delhi

  • The first International Exhibition and Conference on AYUSH and Wellness sector- AROGYA 2017 begins in New Delhi today.
  • The conference was inaugurated by the MoS (Independent charge), Ministry of Ayush Shripad Naik.
  • The theme of the conference is ‘Enhancing the global potential of Ayush’.
  • The objective of the conference is to highlight the strength and scientific validation of Indian System of Medicine in the global context.
  • AYUSH is the acronym of - Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.

US-South Korea begins largest Air Exercise -‘Vigilant Ace’

  • The United States & South Korea has started their largest Air exercise which is named as ‘Vigilant Ace’ in Seoul, South Korea.
  • The five-day joint exercise came after when North Korea has tested it most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile ‘Hwasong 15’.
  • The joint exercise is designed to enhance readiness and operational capability and to ensure peace and security on the Korean peninsula.

Prithvi Shaw to lead in 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup

  • The BCCI has announced that Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw will be the captain of the 16-member Indian team in next year's ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup.
  • The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup will be held in in New Zealand from 13th January to 3rd February 2018.
  • India lost the final against the West Indies in Bangladesh in 2016.
  • India has won the U-19 World Cup title thrice in 2000, 2008 and 2012.

Virat Kohli becomes the first captain to hit six double centuries in Tests

  • Captain of Indian Cricket team, Virat Kohli became the first captain to hit six double centuries in Test cricket.
  • He scored his record sixth Test double hundred in 238 balls on the second day of the ongoing third Test against Sri Lanka at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
  • Also, Virat Kohli became the second Indian cricketer to score back-to-back double hundreds after Vinod Kambli.
  • The list of most double hundreds in a test match is topped by Australian legend Don Bradman with 12 centuries which is followed by -
  • Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (11), West Indies Brian Lara (9), England’s Wally Hammond (7) Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene (7) and Virat Kohli (6).

Deepika Kumari wins bronze medal Archery World Cup 

  • Deepika Kumari of India has won the bronze medal at the Indoor Archery World Cup which was concluded in Bangkok.   
  • Korean Kim Surin defeated Deepika Kumari by 6-5.
