Ravichandran Ashwin breaks Lillee's record of fastest 300 Test wickets

  • Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become the fastest bowler to reach the milestone of 300 Test wickets in his 54th match.
  • Earlier, Australian fast bowling legend Lillee had reached the milestone in 56 Test matches way back in 1981.
  • Ashwin is only the fifth Indian bowler to complete a career 300-wickets in Test cricket behind Anil Kumble.
  • Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417) and Zaheer Khan (311).

India defeat Sri Lanka by innings and 239 runs

  • Today, India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 239 runs to win the second cricket Test at Nagpur.
  • The visitors were bowled out for 166 runs in 49.3 overs in their second innings on the fourth day.
  • With this win, India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gopi wins Asian Marathon Championship Gold

  • Gopi Thonakal (29-year) created history by becoming the first Indian man to clinch the gold medal in the Asian Marathon Championships (16th edition) in Dongguan, China.
  • He completed the distance in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 48 seconds, finishing ahead of Petrov Andrey (Uzbekistan) who clocked 2:15:51 hours.
  • The bronze medal went to T.Byambajav(Mongolia), who clocked 2:16:14 hours.
  • Thus, Gopi has become the first Indian man to win the title after the formation of separate Asian Marathon championships.
Note:
  • Wayanad, Gopi studied at the Kakkayaval School Kerala, before enrolling for a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the Mar Athanasius College in Kothamangalam.
  • He dropped out of college to join the Indian Army at the age of 21 through the sports quota.

India clinches 10 medals at Para-Badminton World Championships

  • India clinched 10 medals (including two Gold) at the Para-Badminton World Championships at Ulsan in South Korea.
  • Parul Parmar bagged both the Gold medal in the Women's Singles Standing Lower (SL3) Final and also the title clash of Women's Doubles (SL 3-4) section.
  • Two Silver medals by Tarun Dhillon in Men's Singles (SL-4) and Manoj Sarkar in SL-3 section.
  • India won six Bronze medals.

China successfully launches remote sensing satellites

  • China has successfully launched remote sensing satellites designed to conduct electromagnetic probes & other experiments.
  • The satellites were launched on board of Long March-2C rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan province.
  • The Satellite developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

26th November: National Milk Day

  • The National Milk Day (NMD) has been observed on 26th November across India to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the White Revolution Dr. Verghese Kurien.
  • The idea of observing National Milk Day was first mooted by Indian Dairy Association (IDA) in 2014 on the lines of World Milk Day that is observed on 1st June every year under the aegis of UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Note:
  • Dr. Verghese Kurien is also known as the Milkman of India and the architect of Operation Flood.
  • The idea that transformed India from a milk-deficit country into the world’s largest milk producer.

26th November: Constitution Day being Celebrated

  • The Constitution Day in India is being celebrated every year on 26th of November.
  • India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26th of November in the year 1949 and came into force on 26th of January in 1950.
  • The day is celebrated to value and preserve the rich heritage of composite culture and to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform.
  • The HRD Ministry has launched a Digital Signature campaign to generate awareness on fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution.

Soumya Swaminathan to take charge as WHO Deputy DG in Dec

  • Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) chief Dr. Soumya Swaminathan is set to assume the charge of Deputy Director-General of the WHO in Geneva next month this year.
  • Early last month, her appointment as the Deputy Director-General for Programmes, announced by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • It is the second-highest position in the WHO.
Note: Soumya Swaminathan is the daughter of MS Swaminathan, considered the father of India’s Green Revolution, and Mina Swaminathan, a well-known educationalist.

Axis Bank launches blockchain-based International Payment Service

  • Axis Bank has launched an instant international payment services using Ripple’s enterprise blockchain technology solution for retail and corporate customers.
  • The bank is offering the facility only to its retail customers in the country to receive payments from the UAE-based Rak Bank and for its corporate customers to receive payments from Standard Chartered, Singapore.

Bamboo not a tree anymore as president clears ordinance amending forest law

  • President ‘Ram Nath Kovind’ has cleared an ordinance amending the Indian Forest Act, 1927, omitting bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the definition of trees.
  • Earlier, the union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the promulgation of the Ordinance on amendment of Section 2 (7) of the Indian Forest Act, 1927.
  • This would help in exempting it trees that need permits for felling or transportation.
Note:
  • Bamboo grown in forest areas shall continue to be governed by the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.
  • The ordinance omits bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the definition of trees, thereby exempting it from requiring permits for felling or transportation.

Maharashtra CM lays foundation stone of healthcare center for children

  • Chief Minister of Maharashtra ‘Devendra Fadnavis’ and Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar jointly laid the foundation stone of a healthcare centre for children in Kharghar, Mumbai.
  • The center is named as 'The Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Health Care and Training in Paediatric Heart Care Skill'.
  • It would be operational in about a year.

India urges UN to declare 2018 as 'International Year of Millets'

  • The Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has sent a proposal to United Nations (UN) for declaring 2018 as "International Year of Millets" to raise awareness among consumers, policymakers, industry, and research sector.
  • Promotion of production and consumption of millets through conscious efforts at the global level is likely to contribute substantially in the fight against targeted hunger and mitigate the effect of climate change in the long run.

NFAI displays exhibition of cinema posters at IFFI

  • The National Film Archives of India (NFAI) has put an exhibition of cinema posters at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
  • The exhibition, entitled ‘Stree: A Tribute to Womanhood in Indian Cinema’, showcases the transformation of women through the decades as seen through films, celebrating the different shades of womanhood.
  • The exhibition displays selected film posters from all eras and languages of Indian cinema and paints a comprehensive picture of films about women.
  • Indian cinemas have raised the issues of gender discrimination, child marriage, domestic violence, dowry and female foeticide.

Intensive training programme for EWRs inaugurated today

  • The Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has inaugurated an intensive training programme for Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) and master trainers in New Delhi.
  • The Ministry is initiating the capacity building programme through National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development with an objective to empower these women representatives.
  • This will help them assume the leadership roles and guide their villages towards a more prosperous future.
Note:
  • This training programme will ultimately train approximately 20 thousand EWRs, covering about 50 EWRs from each district.
  • They will serve as catalysts for social change and function as peer facilitators in the field.
