Home Ministry conducts Multi-State Mega Mock Tsunami Exercise 2017

  • Today, the Ministry of Home Affairs conducts a multi-State mega mock exercise on tsunami preparedness.
  • The Ministry with the help of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services will conduct the exercise simultaneously in 31 coastal districts across four States (West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu) and Union Territory (UT) Puducherry along with the entire East Coast.
  • The participants from 11 Pacific Island countries will observe the entire exercise to take away key lessons and best practices to be adopted while preparing for and responding to a disaster situation.
Note: The exercise is one of the various activities planned on the occasion of the 2nd World Tsunami Awareness Day held on 5th November this year.

IFFI nominates nine movies for ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Medal

  • The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has nominated nine movies (5-India) for this year’s International Council for Film, Television and Audio-visual Communication (ICFT) UNESCO Gandhi Medal.
  • The ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Award will be given to a film that best reflects Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of peace, tolerance, and non-violence.
  • The Indian films competing for the prestigious ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Medal are Kshitij - A Horizon, Manusangada, Poorna, Railway Children and Take-Off.
  • All 9 films are being screened at the ongoing IFFI in Panaji, Goa.

President Kovind inaugurates International Gita Mahotsav at Kurukshetra

  • President Shri Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated the International Gita Mahotsav at Kurukshetra in Haryana.
  • The Mahotsav have various events including Gita Yagya, Gita path, an international seminar on Shri Mad Bhagwad Gita Sant Sammelan etc.
  • Mauritius is participating in Mahotsav as partner country and Uttar Pradesh as partner state.
  • President Kovind also inaugurates and address an International seminar on Shri Mad Bhagwad Gita.

12th Standing Committee meeting of Inter-State Council to be held today

  • Today, the 12th Standing Committee meeting of the Inter-State Council held under the Chairmanship of Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.
  • The meeting will discuss the recommendations of the Punchhi Commission on Centre-State Relations.
  • Representatives of 30 Union Ministries and Departments and 7 State Governments have also been invited to assist the Committee in its deliberations.
Note: The convening of the Standing Committee meetings twice in the same year reflects the importance attached to the promotion of harmonious Centre-State relations.

President Ramnath Kovind inaugurates two-day conference on National Law Day

  • Today, President Ramnath Kovind has inaugurated a two-day conference on National Law Day in New Delhi to celebrate the adoption of Constitution.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the valedictory session of the conference tomorrow.
  • The conference will have four sessions to discuss Judicial Review and Parliamentary Democracy- Balancing the separation of powers, appointments to higher judiciary - constraints of collegium system and reforms ahead, structural reforms for overcoming delays in justice delivery and scope of judicial power-judicial activism.
  • The Ministry of Human Resources Development has launched a Digital Signature campaign on Constitution Day affirming faith in Indian Constitution and to generate awareness on fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution.
Note:
  • The National Law Day is being observed jointly by the NITI Aayog and Law Commission of India.
  • The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949.

Govt notifies Minimum Export Price of onion at USD 850 per tonne

  • The union govt. has notified Minimum Export Price of onion at 850 dollars per tonne to ensure its availability in the domestic market.
  • This will discourage cheap export from the country and augment its domestic availability.
  • Earlier, The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) to procure 12 thousand tonnes onion.
Note: MMTC has been given permission to import two thousand tonnes of onion to augment its availability in the market.

Govt. fixes Sovereign Gold Bond rate at Rs 2,961/gram

  • The union govt. has fixed the issue price of Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) at 2,961 rupees per gram for the next subscription period under Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2017 -18.
  • The next subscription period is 27th to 29th of this month.
  • The government had floated Series-3 of Sovereign Gold Bonds 2017-18, for the period from 9th of October to 27th of December this year.
  • Govt. has also decided to allow discount of 50 rupees per gram from the issue price to those investors who apply online and the payment is made in digital mode.

FDI up 17 pc to USD 25.35 bn during April-Sept this fiscal

  • Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country increased by 17% to USD 25.35 billion during April-September fiscal.
  • The main sectors which attract foreign inflows include services, telecom, trading, computer hardware and software and automobile.
  • The total FDI into India including equity inflows reinvested earnings and other capital stood at USD 518.10 billion during April 2000 to September this year.
  • The bulk of the FDI came in from Singapore, Mauritius, the Netherlands, and Japan.

Ritu Phogat clinches silver medal in Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship

  • Ritu Phogat (23-year) has clinched the silver medal in Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship at Poland.
  • She lost against Wrestler Demirhan (Turkish) in the gold medal bout of women's 48-kilogram category.
  • She had won the National championship in Indore this month and bronze medal at the Asian Championships in May 2017.

Lionel Messi wins 4th Golden Shoe as Europe's top scorer

  • Argentine professional footballer Lionel Messi, 30-year (plays for Spanish club FC Barcelona) Lionel Messi received his fourth Golden Shoe award for leading all of Europe's leagues in scoring last season.
  • Messi drew level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of four European Golden Shoes after receiving the award at a ceremony in Barcelona, Spain.
  • He claimed the prize ‘handed to Europe’s top goal scorer for his 37 LaLiga strikes in 2016-17.
  • Earlier, Messi has taken the honors in 2010(34-goals), 2012(50 goals) and 2013(46 goals).
