BANKING & ECONOMY
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a $65.5 million loan agreement with India for checking coastal erosion on the western coast of Karnataka.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Govt of India signed a $300 million loan to continue a series of fiscal reforms in the State of West Bengal to improve the quality of public service delivery.
  • 3rd Global Investors’ India Forum held in New Delhi with the theme ‘Ideate, Innovate, Implement and Invest in India.’
  • The Union Govt unveiled an ambitious plan to infuse 2.11 lakh crore capital over the next two years into Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and prioritised financing support for MSMEs in 50 clusters.
  • India’s state-run companies launched Start-up Sangam initiative to develop new business models, marketing plans, technology and innovations in heavy oil and gas industry sector by supporting 30 start-ups for the next three years through a corpus of Rs 320 crore.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of 2 crore on IDFC Bank for contravention of regulatory restrictions pertaining to loans and advances.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to make Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) compulsory for companies having aggregate fund-based and non-fund based exposure over Rs 5 crore.
  • The Union Govt has extended the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to avail benefits of government schemes to March 31, 2018.
  • Revenue collection under the goods and services tax (GST) remained robust with 92,150 crore collected for the month of September.

  • The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has released an offline facility that will allow taxpayers to finalise their GSTR-3B forms on their own.
  • The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development aims to make financial transactions completely digital in all higher education institutions.
  • The Union Finance Ministry has allowed banks, including top three private sector lenders, viz, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, to accept deposits under various small savings schemes in order to encourage savings.
NATIONAL NEWS
  • Railway Minister Piyush Goyal launched Indian Railway’s first set of solar plants with total capacity of 5 megawatt peak (MWp) on roof tops of Hazrat Nizamuddin, New Delhi, Anand Vihar and Delhi railway stations.
  • The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has decided to develop Integrity Index of 25 Govt Organizations in line with its broader strategy and emphasis on preventive vigilance.
  • The Minister for Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu launched the official website for the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
  • Ministries of Power and Textiles have joined hands under SAATHI (Sustainable and Accelerated Adoption of efficient Textile technologies to Help small Industries) initiative.
  • The Union Govt appointed former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Chief Dineshwar Sharma as its Representative (or special interlocutor) to initiate and carry forward sustained dialogue on Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) with all stakeholders.
  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2019-20 taking base year as 2011-12 and 40% by the year 2022-23 in order to make telecom sector greener.
  • State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has drawn a blueprint to raise crude oil production by 4 million tonne (MT) and almost double natural gas output by 2020 to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi's target of cutting India's import dependence by 10 per cent.
  • The Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has de-affiliated close to 400 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) after inspections found that the institutes lacked requisite infrastructure and trainers for imparting vocational training to students.

STATE NEWS
  • Tamil Nadu govt has sanctioned Rs. 10 crore towards setting up of a Tamil Chair at the Harvard University in the US.
  • The Madras High Court banned the use of “photographs or pictures” of living persons on “banners, flex boards, signboards” across the state.
  • Puducherry will become eligible to play the Ranji Trophy, currently contested by 28 teams, next season following their elevation to associate membership of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
  • Tamil Nadu govt laid the foundation stone for an aerospace park in 245 acres and at an estimated cost of 198 crore at Kanchipuram district.
  • Paika rebellion (Paika Bidroha) of 1817 will be named as First War of Independence against British Rule in history books from next academic session.
  • Rajasthan Govt has introduced The Code of Criminal Procedure (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill, 2017 in the state assembly to protect both serving and former judges, magistrates and public servants in state from being investigated for on-duty action without its prior sanction.

  • Saudi Arabia has become the first country to give citizenship to a robot named Sophia, which was created by Hong Kong-based Company Hanson Robotics.
  • The International Conference of heads of Metrology Institutes held in Sevres, France has decided that the measure of kilogram will no longer be pegged to cylinder.
  • Burundi has become the first country to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, which is based in the Hague, Netherlands.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the India’s new chancery complex at Baridhara diplomatic enclave in Dhaka, capital city of Bangladesh.
  • The fourth edition of ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM)-Plus held in Philippines in which India represented by Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

  • Scientists from the Broad Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in US have created a new gene-editing tool that tweaks the individual RNA 'letters' in human cells.
  • Indian Navy has cleared the new mission-based deployment plan for deploying mission-ready ships and aircraft along critical sea lanes of communications and choke points in Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • The researchers from Florida State University in the U.S. developed a method that uses rainfall rates to mark the span of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) at any given location throughout the affected region.
  • An organic filter that allows only near-infrared (NIR) light to pass through has been developed by scientists at the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) based in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Britain-based shipwreck hunter has found maritime astrolabe, a navigation tool that guided Portuguese explorers on perilous voyage to India in 16th century.
