HSBC names John Flint as next chief executive

  • HSBC has appointed John Flint as its next chief executive.
  • He will take over from current chief executive Stuart Gulliver.
  • currently, Mr. Flint runs HSBC's retail and wealth management business.
  • He will start in his new role on 21st February 2018.
  • HSBC has around 4,000 offices in 70 countries and territories across Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America, and around 37 million customers.
  • The HSBC name is derived from the initials of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.

India appoints Gautam Bambawale as new ambassador to China

  • The Indian govt. has appointed Gautam Bambawale (Indian foreign service officer of the 1984 batch) as its next ambassador to China.
  • Currently, Bambawale is India’s high commissioner to Pakistan.
  • India’s ambassador to China ‘Vijay Gokhale’ has been appointed economic relations secretary at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Note: An ambassador(diplomats) is a diplomatic representative that attends international meetings, banquets, parties, and acts as a figurehead for their country of origin.

SBI to set up country's largest innovation center at Mumbai

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) is creating a 15,000-sqft innovation center at the cost of around Rs 100 crore in Navi Mumbai.
  • It will have 40 dedicated zones for each technology like blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
  • The center will be the largest innovation center by any financial services company in the country.

Retail inflation at 3.28% in September

  • Retail inflation stood at 3.28% in September 2017 (unchanged from August).
  • In September 2106, Retail inflation had stood at 4.39%.
  • According to Central Statistics Office data, overall food inflation moderated to 1.25% in September.
  • Retail inflation in vegetables softened to 3.92%.
  • Pulses and products saw deflation, or a fall in prices of 22.51% during the month under review.

World's largest combustion research centre inaugurated at IIT Madras

  • The world's largest combustion research centre has been inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras in Tamil Nadu.
  • The National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) has inaugurated by NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat.
  • It will provide an impetus to research in 'Alternative Energy and Environmental Protection' by focusing on effective utilisation of combustion as a means of thermo-chemical energy conversion.

Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah sign deal in Cairo

  • Hamas and Fatah have signed a reconciliation deal, ending a decade-long rift between the two Palestinian factions in Cairo.
  • The deal is to cover security, administrative and border crossing arrangements in the Gaza Strip.
  • Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have been ruled separately since deadly clashes between the two groups broke out in 2007.
  • Hamas won parliamentary elections in the occupied territories the previous year, and reinforced its power in Gaza after ousting Fatah from the enclave.

India 100th on global hunger index, trails North Korea, Bangladesh

  • India has a “serious” hunger problem and ranks 100th (last year 97th position in) out of 119 countries on the global hunger index — behind North Korea, Bangladesh, and Iraq but ahead of Pakistan.
  • The country’s serious hunger level is driven by high child malnutrition and underlines need for stronger commitment to the social sector.
  • India stood at 97th position in last year’s rankings.
  • India is ranked 100th out of 119 countries, and has the third highest score in all of Asia — only Afghanistan and Pakistan are ranked worse.
  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a multidimensional statistical tool used to describe the state of countries’ hunger situation.

Eminent historian Satish Chandra passes away

  • Veteran eminent historian Satish Chandra (95-year) passed away.
  • His two-volume book Medieval India was a well-received reference book on history that generations of students have studied.
  • Chandra has founded JNU’s Centre for Historical Studies.

India-Sri Lanka JTE 'MITRA SHAKTI 2017' started

  • The fifth India-Sri Lanka Joint Training Exercise (JTE) MITRA SHAKTI 2017 has started at Aundh Military Station, Pune. The exercise is long.
  • The 14 Day exercise is based on Counter Terrorist Operations and an Infantry company from both the countries is participating in the same.

Shakib Al Hasan to be inducted in MCC World Cricket Committee

  • All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has become the first cricketer from Bangladesh to be inducted in the MCC World Cricket Committee under the chairmanship of Mike Gatting.
  • Shakib Al Hasan is regarded as one of Bangladesh's finest players since they were awarded the Test status in 2000.
  • He has played 51 Test matches and 177 One-day.
