New Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi sworn in

  • Prof. Jagdish Mukhi (74-years) has been administered the oath of office by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice, Ajit Singh at a function in Gauhati.
  • Earlier, Prof Mukhi served as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The governors of the states have similar powers and functions at the state level as that of the President of India at Union level.
  • The governor acts as the nominal head whereas the real power lies with the chief ministers of the states and their councils of ministers.
  • Mukhi gained a B. Com (1965) from Raj Rishi College in Alwar, Rajasthan, followed by an M. Com (1967) from the University of Delhi.
  • He was awarded a Ph.D. in Finance from Kurukshetra University in October 1995.
  • Prof. Jagdish Mukhi was a professor at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University.

PNB MetLife appoints Ashish Srivastava as MD and CEO

  • PNB MetLife India Insurance Company Ltd (PNB MetLife) has appointed ‘Ashish Srivastava’ as a new Managing Director (MD)& Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company.
  • Earlier, Srivastava was an interim CEO at PNB MetLife.
  • Since 20111, PNB MetLife India Insurance Company Limited (PNB MetLife) is one of the leading life insurance companies in India.
Note: PNB MetLife has as its shareholders MetLife International Holdings LLC (MIHL), Punjab National Bank Limited (PNB), Jammu & Kashmir Bank Limited (JKB), M. Pallonji and Company Private Limited and other private investors, MIHL and PNB being the majority shareholders.

Rajesh Nath gets Germany's highest civilian honor

  • The Managing Director (MD) of VDMA India ‘Rajesh Nath’ has been conferred the ‘Cross of the Order of Merit’, the highest civilian honor awarded to individuals for their services to Germany.
  • The award was instituted in 1951 and is Germany’s only honor that is awarded to both Germans and foreigners for achievements in the economic, social, political, or intellectual realms.

J&K govt launches Aadhaar enrolment drive for students

  • The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) govt. has started an Aadhaar enrolment drive for nearly 14 lakh school children in the state.
  • Aadhaar enrolment centres have been set up in Phase-1 in six districts of the state which includes Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag, Dodha, Kishtwar, and Samba.
  • The rest of the districts will be covered in Phase-2 for which the necessary equipment, machinery, and other measures are being undertaken.

Haryana govt to provide 50 pc subsidy on onion seed

  • Haryana Govt. has decided to provide 50% subsidy on onion seed on the first-come-first-serve basis to encourage farming of kharif onion in the state.
  • The maximum amount limit of subsidy on the onion seed is 500 rupees per kg seed or 50%, whichever is less would be provided.
  • The maximum quantity of seed provided is 10 kg per hectare per farmer.
  • Now, farmers can obtain the seed of different varieties of kharif onion from seed sales centres of Haryana Seed Development Corporation and National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation by just depositing their share of the amount according to rules.

MoRTH to promote new technologies in Highway projects

  • The Union Road, Transport and Highways Ministry has decided to implement a Value Engineering Programme to promote new technologies and material in highway projects.
  • The programme is aimed at using innovative technology, materials, and equipment to reduce the cost of projects and make them more environmentally friendly.
  • The Ministry has also reconstituted a nine-member experts' panel chaired by SR Tambe for approving proposals for use of new technologies, material, and equipment.
  • The expert panel will examine all technical matters involving the new technologies, materials, and equipment referred to it by the concerned Engineers or contractors.

Commerce & industry ministry okays eight industrial licenses for explosives

  • The commerce and industry ministry has approved eight industrial licenses for explosives.
  • These industrial licenses for explosives with proposed investment of 51 crore rupees are likely to create 1,171 jobs.
  • Industrial licensing was abolished for most of the industries but permits are needed for defense and explosives segments.

Vice President inaugurates 3rd Intl. Conference on Yoga

  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated the third International Conference on Yoga in New Delhi.
  • The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Yoga for Wellness’.
  • Experts will deliberate on the scope of yoga in integrated medicine, and control of cancer, depression, gynecological disorders and pain management.
  • Around 500 delegates from 44 countries are attending the conference to provide a common platform to AYUSH and allopathy practitioners, researchers, academicians, policymakers and students.

Delhi Metro hikes its fares from today

  • Today, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Board has decided to go ahead with fare hike as per the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee.
  • Now, the maximum fare, for journeys beyond 32 km, will be Rs. 60.
  • Smart card users will continue to get 10% discount on each ride and get an additional discount of 10% while traveling during off-peak hours.

Gujarat govt cuts VAT on petrol, diesel by 4%

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced to reduce 4% VAT on petrol and diesel prices.
  • Petrol price has been cut by Rs 2.93 per litre, while diesel price has been slashed by Rs 2.72 a litre.
  • Reduction in VAT will cost the state exchequer around Rs 2,316 crore annually.
  • Now, the current 24 % VAT on petrol and diesel will now come down to 20%.

UP Cabinet approves digitization of land maps

  • Uttar Pradesh state Cabinet presided by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has approved digitalization of land maps in 70 districts of the state.
  • Rs. 5.21 crore has been made available for the digitization work.
  • The maps will be available online and help check malpractices in a big way.

Union Home Minister inaugurates the first BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise

  • The Union Home Minister ‘Shri Rajnath Singh’ has inaugurated the four-day First ‘BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise- 2017’ (BIMSTEC DMEx-2017).
  • The Exercise has been conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as the lead agency on 10-13 October 2017.
  • The BIMSTEC DMEx-2017 is being conducted in two phases in Delhi and NCR.
  • The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an international organization involving a group of countries in South Asia and South-East Asia.
  • These 7 countries are Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal.
