Govt. to launch sovereign gold bond scheme -III

  • The union govt. in consultation with RBI has decided to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds 2017-18 Series-III from 9th October this month.
  • The bonds will be sold through banks, Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited, designated post offices and recognized stock exchanges (NSE and BSE) from 9th October this month.
  • Earlier in Nov. 2015, The sovereign gold bond scheme was launched with an objective to reduce the demand for physical gold and shift a part of the domestic saving.

Sovereign Gold Bond 2017-18 – Series-III

  • Issuance -To be issued by RBI on behalf of the Government of India.
  • Denomination - Multiples of gram (s) of gold with a basic unit of 1 gram.
  • Tenure - A period of 8 years with exit option from 5th year to be exercised on the interest payment dates.
  • Minimum size - 1 gram of gold.
  • Maximum limit - 4 Kg for individual, HUF and 20 Kg for trusts and similar entities per fiscal (April-March) notified by the Government from time to time.
  • Interest rate - The investors will be compensated at a fixed rate of 2.50% per annum payable semi-annually on the nominal value.

Vijaya Bank inks MoU with HPCL for Digital Payments

  • Vijaya Bank has joined a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) for enabling all HPCL retail outlets with BHIM/UPI merchant solutions.
  • This rollout will empower all petrol pump attendants and LPG delivery personnel to accept digital payments.
  • Customers can make payments by scanning a payment QR code (using BHIM Vijaya or any BHIM app) that supports payments via UPI.

Tata AIA Life launches ‘Eazy Connect’

  • Private insurer ‘Tata AIA Life’ has launched ‘Eazy Connect’ to extend online customer service to social media platforms.
  • The chatbot will be available through Social Media platforms like Facebook Messenger, Twitter DM, Web chat and Whatsapp.
  • The Chatbot developed to respond to the most frequently asked queries will provide 24/7 service.
  • Eazy Connect Chabot is an innovative offering and has been created to match customers’ fast-paced lives where they need quick & simple ways to stay connected to us.

Filmmaker Kundan Shah passes away

  • The Director Kundan Shah (69-year) passes away due to heart attack in Mumbai.
  • Mr. Shah best known for films like 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' (1983), 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' (1993) and TV shows like 'Nukkad' (1986) and 'Wagle Ki Duniya' (1988).

Former union minister Purushottam Lal Kaushik passes away

  • Former Union minister and socialist leader Purushottam Lal Kaushik (87-years) passed at his home in Chhattisgarh's Mahasamund district.
  • He had served as tourism and civil aviation minister (1977- 1979) and Information and Broadcasting Ministry (July 1979-January 1980).

Centre sets up group to study problems of people along IB, LOC in J&K

  • The Union govt. has set up a study group to examine the problems being faced by the people living near the International Border and the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) due to ever-present threat of cross-border firing from Pakistan.
  • Special secretary in the home ministry Rina Mitra will head the team and submit its report within two months.
  • The study group will look into broadly three issues “demand for land for relocation in case of shelling”, “construction of more bunkers” and “compensation issues” related to shelling.
  • India shares a 3,323-km long border with Pakistan of which 221 km IB and 740 km LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir.

Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao led to improvement in sex ratio at birth

  • According to the union govt., there has been an improvement in sex ratio at birth in 104 districts selected for the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme.
  • Out of the total 161 districts where the programme is being implemented, an increasing trend in Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) is visible in 104 districts.
  • Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme aims at checking female infanticide and educating the girl child.
  • Now. Ministry of Women and Child Development plans to extend this programme to all the districts of the country with the focus on the 56 of the total 161 districts that have shown a decline in SRB.
  • In January 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the BBBP scheme in Haryana’s Panipat.
  • It focuses on districts with the worst child sex ratio (CSR) as per the 2011 Census.

ISRO to set up research center in Guwahati

  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will set up a research center for start-ups, academicians, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs in Guwahati, Assam.
  • ISRO will explore the possibility of using geospatial technology, which includes data generated through global positioning system (GPS), geographical information systems (GIS) and satellite remote sensing for expediting the development of Assam.

Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya & UP Sign MoU to boost culture and tourism

  • Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh & Meghalaya have signed a MoU under the ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ program to boost cultural ties.
  • Under the program, the states will connect with each other to know more about the culture, heritage, and traditions of each other.
  • The programme will enhance the interaction between people of diverse cultures living in different states and union territories, with the objective of promoting greater mutual understanding among them.

American Morgan Hurd wins all-around title

  • American Morgan Hurd (16-year) has won the all-around title at the gymnastics world championships in Montreal.
  • She won the United States' seventh straight Olympic (world all-around title) by edging out Elsabeth Black (Canada) 55.232 to 55.132.
  • Elena Eremina (Russia) took third with a total of 54.799.

John Hastings retires from the Test & ODI Cricket

  • Australian fast bowler ‘John Hastings’ (31-years) has called it quits from Test Match and ODIs, citing recurring injuries as the reason.
  • Hastings wants to solely focus on T20 cricket.
  • He has represented Australia in 1 test, 29 ODIs and 9 T20Is.
  • In 2016, Hastings was the world's leading ODI fast bowler after picking up 29 wickets in 15 matches.
