Y.C Modi named National Investigation Agency Chief

  • Senior Indian Police Service officer ‘Y.C Modi’ (1984 batch- Assam-Meghalaya cadre) has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
  • He will take over from Sharad Kumar (longest serving chief of the NIA) after he completes his tenure on 30th October this year.
  • Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also approved the appointment of Modi as an officer on special duty (OSD) in NIA with immediate effect to ensure a smooth takeover.

Second International Yoga Festival Starts in Kashmir.

  • Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra inaugurated the second International Yoga Festival and International Yoga Sports Championship 2017.
  • The first International Yoga Festival was held in Uttarakhand.

App of Intelligence Wing of SSB and WARB launched.

  • Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has launched Intelligence Wing of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Welfare & Rehabilitation Board (WARB) App in New Delhi.
  • The app comprises features to facilitate retired CAPFs and Assam Rifles personnel to get their grievances redressed, seek skill development and other relevant and important information.

First athletics gold in Asian Indoor Games.

  • Purnima Hembram wins gold in women’s pentathlon, in the fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games at Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
  • The fourth Asian Indoor Games were held in Incheon, South Korea.

New world record for cycling around the world.

  • Mark Beaumont set a new world record of 79 days covering 18,000-mile.
  • He was also awarded the Guinness World Records title for the most miles cycled in a month, from Paris to Perth in Australia(11,315km).

Bollywood actor as Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Uttarakhand.

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat appoints Akshay Kumar as the Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission in the state.
  • He was also appointed as the Brand Ambassador for the cleanliness campaign in Uttar Pradesh in August 2017.

Shaheed Gram Vikas Yojana to honour freedom fighters.

  • Jharkhand Government has launched Shaheed Gram Vikas Yojana aimed at developing villages of freedom fighters in the state.
  • It was launched from Ulihatu Village, birthplace of freedom fighter Birsa Munda.

First Permanent American Base in the Middle East.

  • The US Army and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) inaugurated a permanent base in Israel,which is first in a Middle Eastern country.
  • The base represents the long-standing partnership, the strategic commitment between the armies and the militaries of the United States of America and Israel.

Rajni Kant Misra named Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal

  • Senior IPS officer Rajni Kant Misra (1984 batch Uttar Pradesh cadre) has been appointed director general (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
  • He will hold the post till the date of his superannuation (31st August 2019).
  • Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is one of India's Central Armed Police Forces, currently under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • As of 2017, it has 76,337 active personnel in 67 battalions.

Current account deficit increases to 2.4% of GDP in first quarter: RBI

  • Current account deficit (CAD) of the first quarter of this fiscal widened to 2.4% of gross domestic product (14.3 billion dollars) as imports pushed the trade deficit.
  •  Last year, it was 0.1% (401 million dollars) in the same period.
  • On a sequential basis, the CAD also widened from0.6 % (3.4 billion dollars) of GDP in the fourth quarter of last fiscal.
  • According to the RBI, widening of the year-on-year deficit was primarily on account of a higher trade deficit brought about by a larger increase in merchandise imports relative to exports.
  • The balance of payments for the April-June quarter increased to 11.40 billion dollars from 6.969 billion dollars in the year-ago period and net foreign direct investment in the reporting quarter almost doubled from its level at 7.2 billion dollars in the same period last year.
