Ram Nath Kovind elected as the 14th President of India

  • Today, Former Bihar Governor & National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Ram Nath Kovind (71-year), has won the Presidential polls.
  • Kovind received 65.6 % translating into 702,644 electoral college votes, while UPA candidate Meira Kumar managed to get 34.35 % (367,314 votes).
  • The President of the Republic of India is the Head of the state of India and the Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces.
  • He will be sworn in on 25th July 2017.
  • In the last Presidential polls held in 2012, Pranab Mukherjee had defeated PA Sangma by over 69% votes.

LK Advani gets Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions in Lok Sabha

  • Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader ‘LK Advani’ has received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions as a Lok Sabha member.
  • JD(U) leader ‘Sharad Yadav’ has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award as a Rajya Sabha MP.
  • The award was given by the Vice President ‘Hamid Ansari’ at a function organized by the Lokmat Media Group to honor distinguished Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members in New Delhi.

President inaugurates Paika rebellion commemoration day

  • President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated a function to pay tribute to the martyrs on the occasion of Bicentenary Celebration of the heroic Palika rebellion of Odisha in New Delhi.
  • The Paika rebellion originated under the leadership of Bakshi Jagabandhu.
  • In April 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had felicitated descendants of the Paika warriors in Bhubaneswar.

UIDAI launches 'mAadhaar' app for syncing Aadhaar data on mobile phone

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the ‘mAadhaar app’ for syncing Aadhaar data on the mobile phone, a move that will negate the need to carry the Aadhaar card in wallets.
  • Once you register in mAadhar app, your Aadhaar card profile including a phone number, address and other details get stored on the app.
  • There are biometric locking and unlocking system in the app to allows users to secure biometric authentication by locking biometrics data.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohd Hamid Ansari accepts resignation of Mayawati

  • Rajya Sabha Chairman ‘Mohd Hamid Ansari’ has accepted the resignation of BSP Chief Mayawati from the House.
  • Earlier, the BSP Chief Mayawati had resigned from the Upper House alleging that she was not allowed to speak in the House on issues of Dalit atrocities.

Cabinet clears IRDAI signing pact for information exchange

  • The Union Cabinet has given ex-post facto approval for insurance regulator IRDAI's admission as a signatory to International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MMoU) amid increasing integration of financial markets.
  • International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) is a global framework of cooperation and information exchange between insurance supervisors.
  • The MMoU provides a formal basis for cooperation and information exchange between the signatory authorities regarding the supervision of insurance companies where cross- border aspects arise.

Union Cabinet approves 15% hike in salaries for public sector company employees

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister ‘Narendra Modi’ has cleared a 15% hike in salaries for public sector company employees.
  • The Cabinet approved implementation of the recommendations of the 3rd Pay Commission for central public-sector enterprises' employees.
  • The new wages are effective from 1st of January this year.

ADB supplement report says India expected to achieve projected growth rate of 7.4% in 2017

  • According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) supplement report, India is expected to achieve the projected growth rate of 7.4% in 2017 and further up 7.6% next year on strong consumption demand
  • South Asia will be the fastest growing of all subregions in Asia and the Pacific, with growth on track to meet original projections of 7% in 2017 and 7.2% in 2018.
  • In the supplement, ADB has upgraded its growth outlook in the Asian region to 5.9% in 2017 from 5.7% and to 5.8% for 2018 from 5.7%.

Sri Lanka govt to introduce new procedure for officials visiting country

  • Sri Lankan government will introduce a new procedure for officials visiting the country to meet political representatives and prisoners.
  • The move comes as the government is unhappy with the outcome of the visit by UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counter-terrorism.
  • From now on, the Foreign Ministry will consult the Defense Ministry and Prison Commissioner General before permitting a foreign official to engage in such missions.

Trump nominating Mark Esper to be next secretary of Army

  • US President Donald Trump has nominated Raytheon lobbyist Mark Esper as the next secretary of the Army.
  • Esper has been the top lobbyist for major defense contractor Raytheon since 2010.
  • He also has experience working in the House and Senate, at the Pentagon and at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.
  • He worked for the US Chamber of Commerce and on former presidential candidate Fred Thompson's 2008 campaign.

Athletics Federation of India suspends shot putter Manpreet Kaur

  • Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has provisionally suspended Indian shot putter ‘Manpreet Kaur’ after she tested positive for banned substances for the second time.
  • The test was conducted by National Anti-Doping Officials during the Federation Cup National Championships held in Patiala from 1st - 4th June.
  • Manpreet's urine sample 'A' collected during the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix at Jinhua(China) has been found to have stimulant ‘Dimethylbutylamine’ in it.
  • She had won a gold medal in the recently-concluded Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
