Many aspirants of SSC Stenographer Exam get confused regarding the work area and profile and what type of work they are supposed to do after selection. Since every Stenographer is attached to an important functionary, besides the stenographic work, the duties include assisting with phone calls, dealing with visitors, handling of official documents and files, fixing appointments, arranging meetings, maintaining the diary, liaison within and outside the office, arranging travel related matters etc.

Stenographers must learn a type of shorthand, an abbreviated language form that is designed for rapid transcription, to take notes on a steno machine in order to catch each word that is spoken. The stenographer responsible for recording the proceedings takes the rough transcript and proofreads it before creating a final transcript and committing it to official record. Stenographers must have a good grasp of legal and, for some jobs, medical terminology as well as complete proficiency in the English language to do their jobs to employer standards.

 Work Profile of Stenographer Grade C & D

As a Stenographer, your work profile will depend upon where you are posted. Stenographer Grade C are posted in Ministries/Departments of Central Government, located mostly in Delhi.

Stenographer Grade D is grouped as under:
  • Group ‘X’ – For Departments of Central Government located mostly in Delhi.
  • Group ‘Y’ –  For Departments of Central Government including all over the country.

Responsibility Details
Speech Typing It is the most common job profile of a stenographer. A stenographer is attached to a senior officer and any speech provided by the officer has to be noted down by the stenographer. In this way the stenographer plays an important role in making life of an officer easy. The content of speech differs from one department to another thus it provides a good platform for learning and gaining knowledge in myriad fields.  
Briefings of Press Conferences Stenographers are required to attend the press conferences with the minister or a senior officer so that he/she can easily note down the speech in the event and aid the government make press release regarding the same. In this way there are high chances of getting exposure to experts and eminent professionals of various fields.
Assisting the Minister or Officer A stenographer attached to a particular officer or a minister needs to assist the minister in case of preparing a speech because most of the time, stenographers generally know the subject topics more than anybody because of continuous approach towards the proceedings. This helps in adding to the knowledge base of a stenographer and the horizons of thinking develop.
Helps to Public Relation Officer The Public Relations Officer in the government department is given a stenographer because these officers need information to be provided to public on regular basis regarding the stand of the department in a certain issue.
