Preet Kaur Gill becomes Britain's first female Sikh MP


  • Preet Kaur Gill has become the first Sikh to be elected to the British Parliament’s House of Commons.
  • Labour Party candidate Preet Kaur Gill won her Birmingham Edgbaston seat by polling 24,124 votes, defeating ruling Conservative party rival Caroline Squire by 6,917 votes.
  • Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, known as Tan, also become Labour's first turban-wearing MP. He has won his Slough seat decisively polling 34,170 votes. He defeated his Conservative party rival by a whopping 16,998 votes.



Note: Preet Kaur Gill was born and brought up in Edgbaston has served as a board member of the Sikh Network, an open collective of Sikh activists and professionals in UK from all backgrounds.

Vikram Limaye appointed as the new MD & CEO of National Stock Exchange


  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has approved the appointment of Vikram Limaye as the new managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) of National Stock Exchange.
  • Now, Vikram Limaye has to resign from the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) to oversee the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
  • He will approach the Supreme Court in July when it reopens from vacation to relieve him from his duties at the committee of administrators(CoA) of BCCI.

  • Chitra Ramkrishna quit as MD & CEO in December 2016.
  • Vikram Limaye, a finance veteran started his career with Arthur Andersen in Mumbai in 1987 while pursuing his chartered accountancy.
  • He has also worked with Ernst & Young and Citibank before going to the US in 1994 to pursue a MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

'SATH’ initiative launched by NITI Aayog


  • For furthering the agenda of cooperative federalism, NITI Aayog has launched SATH, a program providing ‘Sustainable Action for Transforming Human capital’ with the State Governments.
  • The objective of this program is to initiate transformation in the education and health sectors.
  • SATH aims to identify and build three future ‘role model’ states for health systems.
  • NITI will work in close collaboration with their state machinery to design a robust roadmap of intervention, develop a program governance structure, set up monitoring and tracking mechanisms, hand-hold state institutions through the execution stage and provide support on a range of institutional measures to achieve the end objectives.
  • The program will be implemented by NITI along with McKinsey & Company and IPE Global consortium, who were selected through a competitive bidding process.


President of India launches mobile app ‘Selfie with Daughter’


  • The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee launched a mobile Application ‘Selfie with Daughter’ at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The App is aimed at raising awareness among people about female foeticide and sex selection.
  • The President has urged the people to take selfies with their daughters to make the campaign a huge success.
  • The app is expected to create awareness and help in dealing with the problems arising out of gender imbalance

Note:
The ‘Selfie with Daughter’ campaign was started by Shri Sunil Jaglan in June 2015 in village Bibipur, Jind, Haryana.
A former Sarpanch, Shri Jaglan has been working in the field of women empowerment and village development.
The aim of the campaign is to motivate society to feel proud to be parents of a girl child which will result in improving the child sex ratio.

India’s Forex reserves reached life-time high of $381.167 bn: RBI


  • According to RBI, India’s foreign exchange (Forex) reserves have increased by $2.404 billion to touch a lifetime high of $381.167 billion in the week that ended on June 2.
  • In the previous week, the reserves had declined by $547 million to $378.763 billion. The increase was due to increase in foreign currency assets (FCAs).


IOB launches retail mart in Thiruvananthapuram


  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), the Lead Bank for Thiruvananthapuram district, has launched the Retail Mart, a retail lending concept, in Kerala's capital city.
  • The exclusive facility that handles retail products has started functioning at the main branch of the bank at Statue Junction in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The Retail Mart has been designed with an aim to complete all the pre-release formailities at the customer’s door step and sanction quality retail loans at a competitive rate of interest with a minimum turnaround time.


Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, former President of the UN General Assembly, passed away


  • Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, former Foreign Minister of Nicaragua and former President of the UN General Assembly, passed away. He was 84.
  • He was born in the United States to a Nicaraguan diplomat who served in the administration of dictator Anastasio Somoza Garcia.
  • In 1961, D’Escoto Brockmann was ordained as a priest of the Maryknoll Missionary Society in New York and adopted the doctrine of liberation theology.


Veteran Congress leader, P. Govardhan Reddy, passed away


  • Veteran Cong leader and Rajya Sabha member from Telangana, Palvai Govardhan Reddy, died of cardiac arrest in Kulu, Himachal Pradesh.
  • He was on his way to attend a Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting, when he suffered a severe heart attack in the car.
  • He was was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1967 from Munugodu constitutency in Nalgonda district in the United Andhra Pradesh.
