PM Modi inaugurates India's longest bridge in Assam


  • Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the country’s longest bridge, the Dhola-Sadia Bridge in Assam.
  • Three lane Dhola-Sadiya Bridge is 9.15 km long, built over the river Lohit, which is a tributary of the Brahmaputra.
  • The bridge will reduce the distance from Rupai on NH- 37 in Assam to Meka-Roing on NH-52 in Arunachal Pradesh by 165 KM.
  • The travel time between the two places will come down from the current six hours to just one hour.
  • Dhola-Sadiya Bridge will be named after noted singer and ‘Asom Ratna’ Bhupen Hazarika.
  • Narendra Modi also layed the foundation stone,an All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Changsari in Kamrup district and an extended campus of Indian Council for Agricultural Research at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district of Assam.

Uttarakhand CM launches water conservation campaign


  • Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat has launched a campaign on water harvesting and conservation in, Dehradun.
  • He also flagged off two mechanised rath, one each for Kumaon and Garhwal regions.
  • The vans would be using audio material and related literature to broadcast information on water conservation and spread awareness in the two regions.

‘Good morning’ squads to tackle open defecation in Maharashtra


  • The Maharashtra govt. has decided to form ‘good morning’ squads to monitor and prevent open defecation in villages and districts across the state.
  • Squads will comprise representatives of local bodies, self-help groups, NGOs, students, and social workers working in the area of sanitation and cleanliness.

Yogi launches JE vaccination drive in 38 districts of UP


  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister ‘Yogi Adityanath’ has launched a massive immunisation drive in 38 districts to eradicate Japanese Encephalitis in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The state govt. also launched a toll-free number (18001805544) to get or provide any information about encephalitis.
  • The government has also fixed the target of immunisation of above 88 lakhs 55 thousand children in the age group of one to 15 during the drive in the targeted districts.

Govt. tweaks start-up definition, benefits to now flow for 7 years


  • The union government has introduced minor changes to the Startup definition.
  • An entity shall be considered as a Startup if its turnover is less than Rs. 25 crore (unchanged) and has not completed seven years from the date of its incorporation /registration.
  • Earlier, only companies up to five years from the date of incorporation were eligible for concessions.
  • In biotechnology sector startups , the period shall be up to 10 years.

Note: A startup should obtain a certificate of an eligible business from an inter-ministerial board of certification as constituted by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.

US Senate confirms Indian-American Amul Thapar to key judicial post


  • The United States Senate has confirmed Indian-American Judge ‘Amul Thapar’(48-year) to a key judicial position on the powerful US court of appeals.
  • He has become the second South Asian judge to be on the US Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears appeals from Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Michigan.
  • currently Thapar is a US District Court Judge nominated by Trump.

Note: Amul Thapar received his undergraduate degree from Boston College and his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Anurag Tripathy appointed as Secretary of CBSE


  • Anurag Tripathy (1998 batch-IRPS officer) has been appointed as the Secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for a period of five years.
  • CBSE is a Board of Education for public and private schools under the Union Government.

President to receive book on PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat'


  • President Pranab Mukherjee has received the first copy of two books 'Mann Ki Baat-A Social Revolution on Radio' and 'Marching with a Billion-Analysing Narendra Modi’s Government at Midterm' at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan formally released the books at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The book Mann Ki Baat: A Social Revolution on Radio by Rajesh Jain is a compilation of Prime Minister Modi’s addresses to the nation on All India Radio every month under the programme Mann Ki Baat.
  • The book Marching with a Billion- Analysing Narendra Modi’s Government at Mid-term written by eminent journalist Uday Mahurkar

Govt. selects 5 bankers selected for IOC stake sale


  • The union govt. has selected five merchant bankers to manage its 3% stake sale in the nation's largest oil retailer Indian Oil Corporation(IOC).
  • It could fetch around Rs. 6000 crore to the exchequer.
  • The five bankers are Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Deutsche Equities, SBI Capital Markets and ICICI Securities.
  • The government has set a target of raising 46,500 crore rupees through minority stake sale and 15,000 crore rupees from strategic disinvestment.
  • Currently, the Union Government holds 58.28 %stake in IOC.
