22 May: International Day for Biological Diversity


  • The United Nations (UN) has proclaimed 22nd May ‘The International Day for Biological Diversity’ (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
  • The theme of 2017 is 'Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism'.

Mumbai Indians beat Rising Pune Supergiant to win IPL 2017


  • Mumbai Indians (MI) has lifted the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 title for the third time.
  • Mumbai Indians recorded one-run win against Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in the title clash at Hyderabad.
  • Earlier, Mumbai Indians had posted a modest 129 for 8.
  • Krunal Pandya from MI (scored 47) was named ‘man of the match’.
  • The 2017 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL-10) was the tenth edition of the IPL established by the BCCI in 2007.

  • Ben Stokes -- Most Valuable Player of the season award.
  • David Warner -- Orange Cap (for scoring 641 runs).
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar -- Purple Cap (for topping the bowling charts with 26 wickets).

  • Basil Thampi -- The emerging player of the season award.
  • Sunil Narine -- The award for the fastest fifty of the season - 15 balls against RCB at the Chinnaswamy.

Bengaluru FC wins 38th Federation Cup football tournament


  • Bengaluru FC has won the 38th Federation Cup Football tournament by defeating defending champion Mohun Bagan 2-0 at Cuttack,
  • CK Vineeth, scored twice for Bengaluru in extra time helping them to win the tournament.
  • Now, Bengaluru also sealed a berth for next year’s Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup.
  • The top eight teams from the 2016–17 I-League season has been participated in the tournament.


Squash: India's Harinder Pal Sandhu bags another PSA title


  • Indian squash player Harinder Pal Sandhu has won the Makati Open in Philippines after beating Mohd. Syafiq Kamal of Malaysia.
  • In the Final, Sandhu stormed past his opponent 11-5, 11-7, 11-7.


Divij-Raja wins first title of 2017 season in Bordeaux


  • The Indian duo of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja have won their first title of the 2017 season by lifting the Bordeaux Challenger trophy at Bordeaux, France.
  • They defeated the fourth seeded Mexican-Kiwi combination of Santiago Gonzalez and Artem Sitak of New Zealand in the straight sets 6-4, 6-4.


Germany's Alexander Zverev wins Rome Masters, beats Djokovic


  • Germany's Alexander Zverev (20-year) stunned Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 to win the Rome Masters tennis tournament.
  • He claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title after becoming the youngest player in a decade to reach a final at this level.
  • Now, Zverev will move to top 10 in the world.


Ukraine's Elina Svitolina wins Italian Open tennis title


  • Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) has won the Italian women's Open tennis title in Rome.
  • She defeated Simona Halep 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
  • For Svitolina, it was her fourth title of the season after wins in Taipei, Dubai, and Istanbul.


Hassan Rouhani re-elected as President of Iran


  • Iran's President Hassan Rouhani (68-year) has won the country's presidential election.
  • He defeated his opponent Ebrahim Raisi (Conservative) by winning a total of 23549616 votes (57%)out of 41220131 votes.
  • Raeisi received around 15786449 votes (23.5%).
  • Rouhani has won his second term by presenting himself as the candidate of change and social freedoms that ended many sanctions and a 13-year standoff over Iran’s nuclear programme.


Deveshwar, Soumitra Chatterjee conferred Bengal's highest civilian award


  • Thespian Soumitra Chatterjee and Y.C. Deveshwar conferred the West Bengal's Highest Civilian Banga Samman award by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
  • Two categories of awards are presented as part of Banga Samman - Banga Bhushan and Banga Bibhushan.
  • The Banga Bibhushan recipients are Deveshwar(Industrialist), Dhiman Ganguly(pulmonologist), Arun Prasad Mukherjee (former Mizoram Governor), veteran actor Chatterjee, and acclaimed poet Nirendranath Chakraborty.
  • This year Banga Bhushan recipients are Rezwana Chowdhury Banya (Bangladeshi singer), Hidmat Fakir (folk singer), Chapal Bhaduri, (impersonator in folk theatre), Lakshman Das Baul(baul exponent) and Abhijit Chowdhury(Liver Foundation secretary and gastroenterologist).


Madhya Pradesh govt announces indefinite ban on sand mining in Narmada river


  • The Madhya Pradesh government has banned sand excavation in the Narmada river.
  • A committee has been formed to suggest scientific ways of mining in the rivers and also explore ways for sand excavation without harming rivers.
  • The sand excavation through machines will be banned in other rivers till the report of the committee comes.


Suresh Prabhu has flagged off High speed Tejas Express


  • The union Railway Minister ‘Suresh Prabhu’ has flagged off (through video conferencing) the high speed, air-conditioned ‘Tejas Express’ from Mumbai to Goa.
  • The train is equipped with CCTV cameras besides smoke and fire detection system.
  • 19-coach Tejas train have bio- vacuum toilets and GPS-based passenger information display system capable of running at 200 kms per hour.
  • The train will operate five days a week during non-monsoon period, and three days a week during monsoon period.

Note:
  • The executive class of Tejas Express has a meager Rs 2,680 with food and Rs 2,525 for non-food.
  • Similarly, the cost of AC Chair Car will be Rs 1,280 for food and Rs 1,155 for food without food.
