Amitabh Bachchan appointed WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis


  • Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan has been appointed as WHO (World Health Organisation) Goodwill Ambassador for the Hepatitis awareness programme in southeast Asia region.
  • He has been brought on board to boost awareness and intensify action to arrest the Hepatitis epidemic.
  • Amitabh had earlier served as ‘Unicef Goodwill Ambassador’ for the polio eradication campaign in India.

Note: A ‘goodwill ambassador’ is a person who advocates for a specific cause on the basis of their notability.

PM Modi launches Narmada river conservation project in MP


  • Prime minister Narendra Modi has launched the river conservation project ‘Narmada Sewa Mission’ at Amarkantak in Anooppur district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The project is a road-map for steps to be taken for the conservation of the Narmada River in the state.

Portugal wins Eurovision 2017 Song Contest for the first time


  • Portugal has won the Eurovision-2017 Song Contest for the first time ever with a melancholy ballad performed by a singer who suffers from a serious heart condition.
  • The fado-tinged song "Amar Pelos Dois" was performed by Salvador Sobral (27-year), who is awaiting a heart transplant.
  • The ceremony was in the capital of ex-Soviet Ukraine Kiev watched by some 200 million TV viewers.

China & Pakistan sign 6 pacts to boost cooperation


  • China and Pakistan have signed six pacts to boost cooperation on the USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
  • The pacts were signed in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
  • The agreements included cooperation in framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, Economic and Technical Cooperation for Gwadar Airport and for East bay Expressway. 

Former Puducherry CM Ramaswamy passes away


  • Former Puducherry Chief Minister S Ramaswami (80-year) passed away.
  • Ramaswami  began his political career in Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) during student days.
  • He became Chief Minister of AIADMK in 1974 heading the AIADMK-CPI coalition ministry for a brief period.

Indian Coir Sector registers record growth last Financial Year


  • According to Union Minister for Micro Small and Micro Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh, the export of Coir and Coir products from the country has touched all time high of 2282 crore by value and 9.57 Metric tonnes in quantity during 2016-17.
  • This represents an increase by 27% over value and 20 % over quantity comparing to the previous year.
  • The Coir Board is going ahead with a project to fabricate a versatile spinning machine capable of producing yarn with uniform thickness in large quantity.

India win 1 gold, 5 silver & 4 bronze in Asian Wrestling Championship


  • Bajrang Punia has won the Gold medal of the Asian Wrestling Championship at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi.
  • He defeated South Korea’s Seunghui Lee 6-2 in the men’s 65kg freestyle category.
  • Sumit has won a silver medal in the 125-kg category on the concluding day of the continental event.
  • The Indian wrestlers overall bagged 10 medals comprising a gold, five silver and four bronze.

Ramit Tandon wins maiden PSA title


  • US-based Indian squash player Ramit Tandon has won his maiden professional title with a convincing win over compatriot Kush Kumar in the SYS Open.
  • Tandon had come into this event as a qualifier beat third seed Kumar 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 in the final.

Mumbai Indians to play Rising Pune Supergiant in first qualifier


  • This year's IPL Cricket play-off berths have been decided and in first qualifier, Mumbai Indians will take on Rising Pune Supergiant at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
  • The winner will advance to the Final, while the losing team will have another chance.
  • In the second qualifier, play the winner of Wednesday's Eliminator between defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. 

Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem to win Madrid Open title


  • Spanish professional tennis player ‘Rafael Nadal’ has won the 5th Madrid Open title of Tennis at Madrid, Spain.
  • He defeated Dominic Thiem (Austria) in straight sets 7-6(8), 6-4.

  • The Madrid Open is a men's and women's professional tennis tournament, held in Madrid, Spain.
  • The event is classified as an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour and a Premier Mandatory event on the Women's Tennis Association tour.
