JNU wins Visitor's Awards -2017 for best university


  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has won the annual Visitor's Award for the 'Best University'-2017.
  • Deepak Pant (Central University of Himachal Pradesh) has won the Visitor’s Award for ‘Innovation.’
  • The Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ is jointly won by Shyam Sunder (Banaras Hindu University) and Professor Niranjan Karak (Tezpur University).
  • President Pranab Mukherjee will present the Visitor’s Awards for the year 2017 at a function on 6 March 2017 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The 'Best University' will receive a Citation and Trophy while winners of Visitor's Award for 'Innovation' and 'Research' will receive a Citation and cash award of Rs. one lakh.
Note:
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in 1969 by an act of parliament.
  • It was named after India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.


Shahpur Kandi dam: Punjab, J&K sign agreement


  • The state govt. of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir have signed an agreement to fast-track the completion of 206 megawatt 2,285-crore rupees Shahpur Kandi dam project on the Ravi river in Chandigarh.
  • “Shapur Kandi project” was declared a national project in February 2008 by the Centre.
Note:
  • Shapur Kandi project will be constructed on the canal from Shahpurkandi Barrage to Madhopur headworks, downstream of the existing Ranjit Sagar Dam.
  • The water released by Ranjit Sagar Dam shall be utilized for generating power from this project.


Delhi LG Anil Baijal approves 37% hike in minimum wages


  • The Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has given the approval to hike minimum wages of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
  • Earlier, Delhi Government had approved a 37% increase in the minimum wages for workers.
  • Minimum wages for unskilled workers have been increased from Rs. 9,724 to Rs. 13,350 rupees per month and semi-skilled workers, from 10,764 rupees to 14,698, skilled category, wages will be from 11,830 to 16,182 rupees and graduates and above category, wages will be 17,604 rupees per month.


Arunachal Pradesh to introduce smart classrooms in govt schools


  • The Arunachal Pradesh state govt. to introduce the concept of smart classes in government-run schools to see use of information and communications technology (ICT) to impart education.
  • In the smart classrooms, the blackboards would give way to digital screens, and pens would be replaced with keyboards.
  • These classes would be introduced in all 264 government higher secondary and secondary schools across the state from class 9 to class 10 in a phased manner.


2 days Guwahati Film Festival to begin today


  • Today, the two-day Guwahati Film Festival has begun at Guwahati, Assam.
  • The festival is being organized by Chalachitram, Directorate of Film Festival and state Cultural department.
  • Several films and documentary will be screened during the festival at three places in Guwahati.
  • The Pride of Assam has been selected as the best film at heritage short film competition which was held as a part of the festival.


French football legend Raymond Kopa passes away


  • French football legend “Raymond Kopa”(85-years) passed in Paris after a long illness.
  • He won the European Cup three times with Real Madrid in the 1950s.
  • Kopa was also the central part of the French side beaten by Pele's Brazil in a classic World Cup semi-final in 1958.


India foreign exchange reserves increases by USD 63.7 million


  • India's foreign exchange reserves increased by USD 63.7 million to USD 362.79 billion in the week ended on 24th February 2017.
  • In the previous week, the reserves had declined by USD 56.8 million to USD 362.73 billion.
  • Gold reserves remained unchanged at 248 billion.
  • The country's reserve position also increased by USD 0.2 million to USD 2.318 billion.


India to supply additional 60 MW power to Bangladesh


  • India is going to supply additional 60 MW power from its ONGC-Tripura power plant to Bangladesh, agreement likely to be signed later this month.
  • Earlier, Bangladesh had sought additional 100 MW power from OTPC's Palatana plant and Tripura government also proposed to the Central government affirmatively.
  • India started supplying 500 MWs power to Bangladesh in 2013 after a deal was signed between India’s NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited and Bangladesh Power Development Board in February, 2012.


DRDO Hands Over 3 Developed Products to Indian Army


  • The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over three products for induction into the Indian Army in New Delhi.
  • The Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar handed over the products to the Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat on behalf of DRDO.
  • The three new products are:
  • Weapon Locating Radar (WLR), SWATHI: The radar provides fast, automatic, and accurate location of all enemy weapons like mortars, shells and rockets firing within in its effective zone of coverage.
  • NBC Recce vehicle MK-I: It was developed by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE).
  • NBC Drugs: The drugs were developed by the DRDO’s institute of Nuclear medicine and allied sciences (INMAS).


Bopanna & Matkowski to play Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships final


  • Indian tennis stars Rohan Bopanna and his Polish partner Marcin Matkowski will play the men's doubles final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
  • They knocked out the Indo Spanish pair of Leander Paes and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 3-6,10-6 in the semi-final of the tournament.
  • There is no Indian competing in the singles of the championships.
