'La La Land' wins six awards at 89th Oscar Academy Awards


  • The showbiz fairy tale "La La Land" has won leading six awards at the 89th Oscar Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre, in Los Angeles (USA).
  • "La La Land" won awards for best actress Emma Stone, its jazz-infused tsongs and its Director, Damien Chazelle.
  • The coming-of-age drama "Moonlight" won the best picture award.
  • Casey Affleck took the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in "Manchester by the Sea".
  • Mahershala Ali won the Oscar for best supporting actor in "Moonlight", while Viola Davis won for best-supporting actress for her role in "Fences".
  • The award for best documentary feature went to "O.J. Made in America".
  • Iranian Film 'The Salesman' Wins Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
  • The Syrian war documentary "The White Helmets" has won the short documentary Academy Award.

  • The 89th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
  • AMPAS presented Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories.


World's first robot table tennis tutor sets Guinness record


  • The world's first robot table tennis tutor in Japan has set a new Guinness World Record for its uncanny ability of being able to play the game better than most humans.
  • FORPHEUS (Future Omron Robotics Technology for Exploring Possibility of Harmonised Automation with Sinic Theoretics) has officially been given the Guinness title for its unique technological intelligence and educational capabilities.
  • The goal of FORPHEUS is to harmonise humans and robots, by way of teaching the game of table tennis to human players.
  • The machine is easily able to act as a coach thanks to cutting edge vision and motion sensors it can use to gage movement during a match.


Government to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds 2016-17-Series IV


  • The government will accept applications to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds 2016-17-Series IV.
  • Applications for the bond will be accepted from today to March 03, 2017.
  • The Bonds will be issued on 17th March,2017.
  • The bond will be sold through banks, Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited, designated post offices and recognized stock exchanges.
  • The cash payments for the Bond will be acceptable up to Rs. 20,000 and tenure will be eight years with an exit option from the fifth year to be exercised on the interest payment dates.
  • Minimum investment in the bonds shall be one gram with a maximum limit of subscription of five hundred grams per person per fiscal year.

Note:
  • The issue price of the Gold Bonds will be 50 rupees per gram less than the nominal value.
  • The investors will be compensated at a fixed rate of 2.50% per annum payable semi-annually on the nominal value.
  • The bonds will be restricted for sale to resident Indian entities including individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, Trusts, Universities and Charitable Institutions.

Rs .350 Cr Central fund to provide high-quality facilities to sports person


  • The union govt. would spend Rs. 350 crore for providing high-quality facilities to the sports persons.
  • 200 trainers will be recruited soon in the Sports Authority of India.
  • The recovery physiotherapy centre will soon be established at the Centre for helping sports persons recover from injuries.
  • The State and Central Governments will promote sports in every village on the pattern of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
  • The Central Government has also approved CSR fund with the budget of about 6,500 crore rupees to involve companies in the promotion of sports and the sports person.


NITI Aayog to organize high-level workshop for advancing Innovation in Passenger Mobility & Transportation


  • Two-day high-level workshop on advancing passenger mobility and transportation has been organized by the NITI Aayog in New Delhi.
  • The workshop in association with an international non-profit organization Rocky Mountain Institute to explore technologies and business models to help India leapfrog traditional approaches to passenger mobility and transportation.
  • The workshop will be followed by the release of a report detailing specific and actionable outcomes and opportunities.


Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurates India’s first post office passport SevaKendra


  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has inaugurated the India’s First Post Office Passport Seva Kendra in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Now the residents of Vidisha and adjoining districts will not need to go to Bhopal to get a passport.
  • The Vidisha’s Post Office Passport Seva Kendra will work as Laghu Passport Seva Kandra.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj represents Vidisha in Lok Sabha.

  • The Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia has inaugurated the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) pavilion at the Gulfood Exhibition in Dubai.
  • 5-day Gulfood exhibition being held from 26th February to 2nd March 2017 at Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai.
  • More than 100 Indian exhibitors are participating in the Exhibition.

Gopi, Athare win men's and women's races in Delhi Marathon


  • Rio Olympian Thanackal Gopi has won the men's title in the second edition of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon and Monika Athare claimed the honours in the women's section.
  • In Men's full marathon Gopi clocked 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 37 seconds to win the race in his first appearance in the event.
  • In women's full marathon, Monika Athare from completed the race in 2 hours, 39 minutes and 08 seconds, to bag her maiden title at this distance.
  • Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and legendary distance runner Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia flagged off all the categories of the New Delhi Marathon.


India wins all 3 medals at Asian Para-Road Cycling Championship


  • India bagged all three medals in the 12.8 Kilometre Individual Time Trial at the sixth Asian Para-Road Cycling Championship in Bahrain.
  • Abhishek (Chandigarh) has won the gold medal, Divij Shah (West Bengal) won the silver and Harinder Singh (BSF) accounted for the bronze medal.
  • Nine members of Indian Para-Cycling team are participating in the event under the aegis of Cycling Federation of India.


Saina Nehwal to represent Olympic Committee in BWF


  • The star shuttler Saina Nehwal would be representing the panel in the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
  • Earlier, she was appointed a member of the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission (AC) last year.
  • She would join the BWF Athletes' Commission as a representative of the IOC AC.
  • The Chair of BWF AC has informed others on the panel about Saina's joining the BWF AC as a representative of the IOC AC.


Heena Sidhu and Jitu Rai Bag Gold at Shooting World Cup


  • Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu has bagged gold for India in 10m pistol mixed team event at the Shooting World Cup in New Delhi.
  • Earlier, Pooja Ghatkar had won the bronze medal for India in the 10m Air Rifle event.


HIL 2017: Kalinga Lancers beat Dabang Mumbai 4-1 to lift title


  • Kalinga Lancers have lifted the fifth edition Hockey India League Title in Chandigarh.
  • They beat Dabang Mumbai 4–1 in the final to win their first title.
  • Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Wizards claimed the bronze medal.

  • The 2017 Hockey India League was held between 21st January and 26th February 2017.
  • Six teams played 34 matches in six venues with final played in Sector 42 Stadium, Chandigarh.
