PM Narendra Modi Releases National Disaster
Management Plan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 June released the National
Disaster Management Plan (NDMP) to make India disaster resilient and reduce
loss of lives. It is the first of its kind of national plan prepared in India.
It emphasizes on a greater need for Information, Education and Communication
activities to prepare communities to cope with disasters.The plan covers all
phases of disaster management : prevention, response, mitigation and recovery.
It provides for vertical and horizontal integration among all the Government
agencies and departments. The plan also identifies major activities such as
early warning, medical care, information dissemination, fuel, search and
rescue, transportation, evacuation, etc. to serve as a checklist for agencies
responding to a disaster.
Rahul Johri Assumes Charge as First Ever CEO
of BCCI
Rahul Johri on 1 June assumed charge as first ever chief executive
officer (CEO) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai.
He was appointed on the recommendation of the Justice Lodha Committee.
World’s Longest, Deepest Rail Tunnel
Inaugurated In Switzerland
Switzerland on 1 June inaugurated Gotthard Base Tunnel, world’s
longest and deepest railway tunnel. The tunnel is also the first flat low-level
route through the Alps. It took 17 years and 12.2 billion Swiss francs to
construct the tunnel. The Gotthard Base Tunnel has route length of 57.09 km and
a total of 151.84 km of tunnels, shafts and passages. It is a part of the
AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA).
It is situated 2.3km deep under the Alps. It is the third tunnel connecting the
cantons of Uri and Ticino after the Gotthard Tunnel and the Gotthard Road
Tunnel.
World Milk Day Observed Globally
World Milk Day was observed across the world on 1 June 2016. It is
observed to increase awareness on milk and to publicise activities connected
with milk and the milk industry. It also seeks to inform people about
usefulness of milk and milk products, its nutritional value and economic
importance. The observance of the day was initiated in 2001 by the UN Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO). FAO actively encourages milk and dairy
consumption as part of a daily diet. India celebrates National Milk Day on 26
November in memory of Dr Verghese Kurien, Father of India’s White Revolution.
The first National Milk Day was observed on 14 November 2014.
